Book Reviews of Cure Unknown: Inside the Lyme Epidemic

Book Review: THE Reference Manual for Lyme
Summary: 5 Stars

Pamela Weintraub presents an exhaustive account of the history, treatment options, and controvosy of Lyme disease and includes doctors, patients, drugs, court cases, and the latest scientific evidence (up to Spring 2008).

I have a large stack of books on my bedside table I'm currently reading but read this book cover to cover in 2 days. I couldn't put it down.

This is a must read for anyone affected by Lyme Disease, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Fibromyalgia, Lupus, Rheumatoid Arthritis and ALS.

This is NOT a biased, opinion-based, personal account about one family's struggle with Lyme but a thorough, clear, fact-filled reference manual. Anyone seeking treatment for themselves or family members should read this first.

Book Review: A Must Read for All Parents
Summary: 5 Stars

I'm not a doctor, nor a medical researcher. But I am a parent who's been fighting for the life of my teenage daughter who has now been diagnosed with Lyme Disease + 2 co-infections. I have a biology degree and have been through a lot of illnesses myself, but I've never seen anything like the story of Lyme. This book is a must-read for all parents. It is a fact-based narrative that tells it like it is, from the political in-fighting in the medical community to the important research that's not getting the attention it should. And the stories it tells about those infected with Lyme are mesmerizing. We fight for a diagnosis, then we fight for treatment. If my family wasn't living this story ourselves, I'd think this was a Stephen King novel.

Book Review: The ammunition you need to fight for treatment
Summary: 5 Stars

I am currently fighting Lyme after three years undiagnosed. My symptoms were real and the science is real. The author recounts family experiences that will ring true for anyone who has fought this disease and battled the doctors who deny that the tests are faulty. More importantly, she helps the lay person understand the science that exists which proves the stealth of this organism.
Have undiagnosed pain or a recent diagnosis of fibromyalgia or chronic fatigue? Rheumatic disease that isn't responding to treatment? Had a Lyme test done but you were told it was negative? You need this book.
There is scientific evidence to support the need for new testing protocols.

Book Review: Enlightening Book...
Summary: 5 Stars

Very impressed with the book. Well researched, and I find it comforting to know that the woman who wrote the book is a science journalist with years of experience, especially since I am not a scientist. Because of that fact, I have to put a certain amount of faith in a writer's work and technique. There is an extensive bibliography in the back of the book, a bonus for any details one cares to research on their own. I was very sad when the book ended--- I just wanted to keep reading! I feel like I have a much better handle on the subject now, as well as being informed of current research. Thanks Pamela!

Book Review: Solid and Hard Hitting
Summary: 5 Stars

Pamela Weintraub has done an incredible job sifting through massive amounts of often conflicting information to deliver a readable and engaging synthesis of Lyme Disease in America. While there are a number of books on the subject Cure Unkown represents a balanced, factual account of the controversy surrounding this misunderstood disease. Ms. Weintraub has woven her analytical tour de force with the moving account of her family's journey through the dark, Kafkaesque landscape of today's medical establishment. This is a must read for anyone interested in better understanding Lyme Disease.
