Book Reviews of Cure Unknown: Inside the Lyme EpidemicBook Review: Thank You! Thank You! Thank You! Summary: 5 Stars
I am so thankful to Pamela Weintraub for writing this book because it has helped me navigate the murky waters of lyme in the last two weeks as we seek treatment for our 11-year-old son who was just diagnosed. Even though we went directly to a lyme-literate doctor for help based on advice from our naturopathic doctor we got a real whiff of what Pamela Weintraub refers to as "the land of lyme" during the last week. I was much better prepared to help my son because of this book.
I am appalled that something this serious and this widespread is not being given more press and that children continue to go off to camps (where my son and another classmate picked up lyme disease) where camp staff, parents and teachers are blithely unaware of the very serious risks posed by ticks. I am simply in awe of Weintraub who was able to write such a riveting and scholarly book after all she and her family has been through. Great job! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
Book Review: Denying a medical reality Summary: 5 Stars
I wish every doctor who said 'you can't have Lyme disease' would read Pamela Weintraub's book. Sadly, her family's experience is not unique or 'far out' but frightenly similar to that of many of us. She did a fabulous job of telling her family's story, while raising awareness (accurately!) of the medical/ethical/scientific crisis that surrounds this disease. Ms. Weintraub clearly describes the medical travesty that has allowed lives to be ruined. While Lyme is often thought of as an 'east coast disease,' we share her story here in Oregon. Despite doctors being woefully uninformed, they adamantly deny the existence of this serious, often chronic, disabling disease. This includes our state medical university that patently claims patients can't possibly have it! People are suffering and lives are being wasted because a medical mystery is being denied rather than investigated. Ms. W. tells the whole story extremely well!
Book Review: Amazing Summary: 5 Stars
Incredibly well written and answers many questions of why Lyme Disease is such a problem all across the US and world.
The Doctors, medical societies, health departments, and government who should be there to protect our citizens has failed us on so many levels. Pam put's it together and tells us some of the stories and why.
The argument over Lyme Disease should have been resolved over 20 years ago when they first discovered this disease in significant numbers of people.
Today it continues to be the most political, misrepresented, undiagnosed and devastating disease that you can get from otherwise living a health active lifestyle. It's as easy to get as small tick bite, yet as hard to get help as if your swimming with a shark.
They used to say "You don't get Lyme, until you GET Lyme". Now people can get Lyme by Reading Pam's Book.
Book Review: Cure Unknown review Summary: 5 Stars
"Cure Unknown: Inside the Lyme Epidemic" by Pamela Weintraub is the most comprehensive text available on the topic of lyme disease. My daughter and her husband and two children were diagnosed with lyme disease in July 2008 and have suffered through a difficult year in upstate New York. I have bought 8 copies of this book for my daughter, family members, a friend with lyme disease, and as gifts for several doctors.
The author shares her family's personal trials with the disease and finding medical care, and describes the controversies and politics behind the lyme disease story that pits physicians, policymakers, researchers, and affected families against each other.
The prevalence and spread of lyme disease are increasing throughout the United States, and Weintraub's book provides a scientifically accurate, troubling, and compassionate story that should be in every physician's library.
Book Review: 5-Star great book! Summary: 5 Stars
It was a great book! It was both a good read (I read it out loud to my husband who has Chronic Lyme) and a great source of information. I enjoyed the case history approach to the book that created a poignant human aspect to offset the more scientific information. I also enjoyed the political aspect she presented that helps explain why so many physicians and the CDC have stubbornly ignored this terrible disease. I appreciated her sharing the frustration and confusion of those trying to navigate the Lyme dilemma. I could really identify with it as it has been a very rough journey for our family (we lived in Connecticut) and it really clarified for me the nature of the microbe we were dealing with and how best to go about beating it. I was both informed and encouraged and I am indebted to Pam for sharing her journey so we might all benefit from her experiences.
