Book Reviews of Crime Beat: A Decade of Covering Cops and KillersBook Review: The Title Says It All Summary: 4 Stars
Folks, it is what it is. The title says it all so we shouldn't be all that surprised by what we find in the book. Michael Connelly was a crime beat reporter for the South Florida Sun-Sentinel and the LA Times and as such he found the origins of his style, nurtured it through years of covering gritty real-life crime, and came away the writer that he is today.
Don't expect to find fictional criminals or settings or plotlines with happy endings. This is, unfortunately, what he uncovered as a reporter. The perps, victims and police are or were real and the book clearly demonstrates the nastier side of daily lives and, well, daily deaths.
Also, don't try to measure this against Connelly's fiction. Take it as it is- real crime beat news articles, talented ones at that, and perhaps the genesis of a better writing career.
Just keep in mind that the fiction you like from Connelly wouldn't have happened without this. So four stars for all the work he put in earlier and where it eventually led.
Summary of Crime Beat: A Decade of Covering Cops and KillersBefore Michael Connelly became a novelist, he was a crime reporter, covering the detectives who worked the homicide beat. In these vivid, hard-hitting pieces, Connelly leads the reader past the yellow police tape as he follows the investigators, the victims, their families and friends--and of, course, the killers--to tell the real stories of murder and its aftermath. Book Description: From No. 1 bestseller Michael Connelly's first career as a prizewinning crime reporter--the gripping, true stories that inspired and informed his novels. Before he became a novelist, Michael Connelly was a crime reporter, covering the detectives who worked the homicide beat in Florida and Los Angeles. In vivid, hard-hitting articles, Connelly leads the reader past the yellow police tape as he follows the investigators, the victims, their families and friends--and, of course, the killers--to tell the real stories of murder and its aftermath. Connelly's firsthand observations would lend inspiration to his novels, from The Black Echo, which was drawn from a real-life bank heist, to Trunk Music, based on an unsolved case of a man found in the trunk of his Rolls Royce. And the vital details of his best-known characters, both heroes and villains, would be drawn from the cops and killers he reported on: from loner detective Harry Bosch to the manipulative serial killer the Poet. Stranger than fiction and every bit as gripping, these pieces show once again that Michael Connelly is not only a master of his craft, but also one of the great American writers in any form.
