Book Reviews of Creating Professional Drum Loops Book/dvd

Book Review: A tool for competent drummers
Summary: 2 Stars

As a guitarist and electronic music 'programmer' I have been searching for a decent source for drum and percussion systems and ideas. This book is written by a drummer and frankly, it is written for drummers - it seems to me to be more like an (incomplete) exercise book of drum grooves to practice than an instruction manual on how to create drum loops. There is no explanation on what the stylistic building blocks are, and as a source book intended for any musician, it would be nice to know what makes a hip-hop loop different from a funk loop. There are gaping holes, as the styles covered stop dead in their tracks somewhere around the 1960's. What about pop loops? House? Trance? Drum 'n Bass? But the biggest gap of all? Where is the Jazz!?!?

I had to wiki the term Olodum since three of the 33 loops are in this style, and maybe it's a style that's crucial to a drummer, but the number of samba/batucada (which is what Olodum is - sort of) related loops seen in this volume seems ridiculous, unless of course you're writing a lot of Brazilian music.

I would like to have seen explanations of the styles, and more variety of styles. Also the styles that are given are often too broad and largely meaningless: African...that is a whole continent with hundreds if not thousands of styles, you don't say "here's an American beat" and play the drum beat to 'Hound Dog'. Ridiculous. Or rock...what kind of rock? Instead of useful information we get info on what drum brands were played and with what brand of sticks.

Even as a drummer I would be hard pressed to find value in this book.

I must admit that I did learn one or two things, especially with the structures in the 12/8 examples and so it gets two stars instead of one. But trust me, you'd be better off buying a book or DVD that addresses a style or collection of styles in a comprehensive manner. Even a publication/production created specifically for drummers and percussionists.

Summary of Creating Professional Drum Loops Book/dvd

Today drum loops are bigger than ever and Creating Professional Drum Loops will have you creating a library of your own drum and percussion loops in no time.

All of the Quick Load loops are presented in standard notation, with detailed descriptions of the instruments played, head combinations, and sticks used. The specially designed CD contains over 30 loop examples that can be imported as stereo audio files into any digital realm. Each loop is self-contained and demonstrated with drumset and percussion, drumset only, and percussion only. Ed Roscetti's loop concepts are a must for drummers, programmers, composers, and all musicians.
