Book Reviews of Crazy Love: Overwhelmed by a Relentless God

Book Review: Required reading
Summary: 5 Stars

As a preaching minister and avid reader for 30+ years, it takes a great deal for a book to find its way into my "all time, top ten" list; however, Crazy Love did just that.

Pros: (1) The reading is easily-accessible, thought-provoking, personally-challenging, deeply-convicting, prayer-initiating and so, potentially life-changing. (2) Bible classes and small group will definitely want to also take advantage of the DVD to go along with the book. Each of the 10 video clips lasts 6-9 minutes and concludes with 2-3 personal/application questions.

Cons: (1) Too bad each chapter doesn't conclude with several discussion questions. (2) It is also regrettable that the book has no simple subject or Scripture indices.

This is the ideal book to give to those who profess belief as well as being very helpful in showing a way for those yet to believe through the fog of shallow or plastic Christianity. Whether you want to "count the cost" or "re-count the cost" of following Jesus Christ, read this book. I wish every member of every church would read it.

Book Review: Are You Ready to be Challenged?
Summary: 5 Stars

Don't read this book if you find yourself satisfied with comfortably floating along through life - believing that your faith and relationship with God is in a semi-decent place. God, Francis Chan argues, will have none of it and, ultimately, deserves far more.

The whole idea of loving God sure doesn't seem like an original topic, but there's something about this book that is remarkably fresh and challenging. Chan doesn't mince words, if Christians truly love God then that love will dominate and influence all that we do. As if to address the inevitable questions forming in the mind of the reader, Chan devotes a whole chapter to ordinary people who are (or who have) powerfully lived out a life of "Crazy Love."

This is an important book for Christians today. So often our mindset is focused on the bare minimum - what can we do to just get by with the least amount of effort? If you read this book (and you should!) be ready to ditch that mindset.

Book Review: CRAZY LOVE INDEED
Summary: 5 Stars

The cover is great. The writing is the best. Simple language that tugs at you. What is truly important is the book itself. It propells you to live your best life and helps you see through new eyes. An example...the author bought a 1996 Nisson. Why when he can afford nearly any car he wants? Because God's Kingdom is more important. He would rather give fifty thousand dollars to an organization to build an orphanage than to drive a fancy car. In a world where glitz and glamour and high ticket items are cumpling, it refocuses us on doing God's work. The author reminds us through joy what is really important in life. I want to be a part of it. I once heard someone say that the devil doesnt try to get us to turn away from God because of hardship as he did with Job, but now he uses the lure of wealth and fame. Its time to fall in love with God all over again. The Valentine Edition

Book Review: Crazy good!
Summary: 5 Stars

Francis Chan talks about how to live for God completely, to surrender to Him and to receive His crazy love for us. The first chapter talks about the awesomeness of God, that the One who created millions of galaxies also created the caterpillar. The next chapter is about how we could conceivably die at any moment, and therefore, we should turn to God while we can.

There are also a couple of chapters about what a lukewarm "Christian" is like, namely, he isn't really a Christian! They give money as long as it doesn't affect their standard of living, they want to be saved from the penalty of their sin, but not from the power of sin, they claim to love Jesus but only give Him a part of their lives, etc. Very convicting.

Chan says that the bes way to live our lives is to give our lives away in Christian service, and we will experience our best life later in heaven. He gives real world examples of people who live this way.

Great book!

Book Review: This is not a fun read.
Summary: 5 Stars

I will say that I am truly surprised at how well this book is being reviewed here on Amazon (did all these reviewers read the same book?). Mr. Chan has penned for the church in the west a very compelling but soul-wrenching book that forces the reader into some awfully difficult self-examination. This author really has a knack of getting you downwind from your own spiritual BO and lukewarm-ness (and man do I stink). Now I would not say any of this is a bad thing--it is a message that should be considered by all those who would walk the way in Christ (I have changed and repented from many things as a result of some the content stashed between the two covers and I am a better Christ follower today because of it). I gladly recommend this book to anyone who considers themselves to be "in the faith", but I just can't see how this will be received by those who have embraced the easy-believism of the Laodecians.
