Emma Browning's mother died giving birth to her, and her father is the town drunk. She runs a boarding house, and doesn't put up with any rowdy behavior from her borders, but she is ashamed of her father. He's been this way for so long she has given up on ever seeing him change.
Preacher, Jon Atkins, sold his house and donated the money to build a schoolhouse which will double as a church. Emma really doesn't want him in her boarding house, but he has no where else to live. He's been interested in Emma since they were in school together, but she has no use for preachers or for God. However, Jon believes in miracles, and he keeps on trying to win her affections.
Sharlene MacLaren's Little Hickman Creek series just keeps getting better, and in my opinion, this is the best one yet. Heart-wrenching conflict, and a wonderful faith message. Don't miss it.

Twenty-eight-year-old Emma Browning has experienced a good deal of life in her young age. Proprietor of Emma s Boardinghouse, she is mother to an array of beefy, unkempt, often rowdy characters. Though many men would like to get to know the steely, hard-edged, yet surprisingly lovely proprietor, none has truly succeeded. That is, not until the town s new pastor, Jonathan Atkins, takes up residence in the boardinghouse, affecting not only her with his devout faith and strong convictions, but her clientele as well.
