Book Reviews of Cost: A NovelBook Review: My opinion only Summary: 3 Stars
I bought this book because I'd read reviews in several different places and it promised to be good. Also, being a Maine native, I was intrigued.
I did enjoy it, the author set the stage for many different characters to develop...but I was a little disappointed towards the end. I felt like it ended abruptly and it only closed on one character. Maybe she did too good a job at developing the other characters so the readers wanted more on them as well. Overall, it was a pretty good summer read.
Book Review: A good storyline, but... Summary: 2 Stars
I'm not sure if I can finish this book. I agree with the other reviewers who said the prose is unnecessarily flowery and the characters are sort of shallowly stereotypical. I can't bring myself to care about any of them or see them as real people. It's odd that several characters go off on the president in a way tangential and unrelated to the storyline (I could only hear the author's voice in those odd places), and also all enjoy using the phrase "amour propre." Um. I keep skimming to get to the meat of the story, and I don't like to read books that make me feel as though I need to do that. I'm a little bit curious but definitely not riveted.
Book Review: Pretentious Summary: 2 Stars
I started this book last night and got through about 16 pages before stopping in disgust. In the first 14 pages the author uses these words: obdurate, impecuniousness, crepuscular and aquiline. I'm fairly literate and I read voraciously, but those were new ones for me. Sure, the reader can pretty much discern the meaning of the words from their context, but still..... Perhaps the story is one of the greatest ever. I'll never know and that's OK with me.
Book Review: Cliche Summary: 2 Stars
I just couldn't wrap my head around this novel about a family dealing with addiction. I had the most difficulty with the lengthy and flowery metaphors which seemed forced and overdone. Of course this is a matter of personal preference - I like my language and my metaphors clean and straight and not a paragraph long.
Book Review: Very disappointed Summary: 2 Stars
Loved the chapter I read online. Just hugely disappointed when I read the book and can't understand why everyone is so excited about it. It is filled with false starts and stupid mistakes you don't know weather to kick the author for or the characters.
