Book Reviews of Cost: A Novel

Book Review: Reminds me of George Eliot in the Trueness of the Characters
Summary: 5 Stars

It's early in the year so you never know, but it will be an amazing reading year if this one isn't at or near the top of my best-of-the-year list come December. Incredibly compelling and moving. So many elements so well interwoven: the complex world of parenting, the awkward relationships we have with our siblings, the experience of losing a parent or a spouse to Alzheimers. I don't think I've ever seen the idea of the adult child still needing to be the good child delivered so thoughtfully. I find myself thinking of George Eliot, in the way Robinson delivers such realness in fiction.

Book Review: Wrenching look at addiction
Summary: 5 Stars

Robinson, a wonderful writer, has given us a wrenching look at the complexities of addicton.......the horrors for the addict and for everyone who is drawn into his world. She spares the reader none of the grim details as the family tries desperately to find answers and solutions....when there really are none.

The author is a master of character development, in this book and in all her other novels and stories. Her writing is a model for what good fiction should, and can, be.

Book Review: Brilliant!
Summary: 5 Stars

My first experience with Roxana Robinson and I was smitten! This family saga is filled with emotion. Each character is so vividly developed and the reader cannot help but care deeply about each of the members, as they struggle to come together to face a wrenching situation. It depicts drug addiction in the most graphic way and the suffering it brings to the son, who is the victim and to the family members who love him. Powerful, touching, luminous!

Book Review: Harrowing and brilliant
Summary: 5 Stars

What begins as fascinating domestic drama erupts into a wrenching story about three generations of a family grappling with one son's addiction to heroin. Their transformation is stunningly detailed and rich in character--and the book is exquisite. It kept me up until the wee hours of the morning reading.

Cost richly deserves all the accolades it's been getting--and more.

Book Review: Roxana Robinson gets it just right
Summary: 5 Stars

This details of what a family goes through when dealing with addiction are expressed with incredible accuracy in this compelling story. COST is a important contribution to understanding the horrible disease of drug addiction and its effects. It is a story of loss on so many levels, but redemption as well - beautifully done.
