Book Review: 30 fun fabulous patterns in one of the best crochet books in print!

I do not usually post reviews for books, but for "Cool Crochet" it was necessary to make an exception. As with Melissa Leapman's previous book, "Hot Knits," the reader will find a generous number of high quality patterns for a good price. Happily the vast number of these are garment patterns! Who needs another book marketed as a garment pattern book but full of ugly bags and uglier "hip" items?
Unlike many other knitting/crochet books that simply aim to cash in on the trend, this one has been carefully crafted. You will not find pattern mistakes, sloppy technique, or undecipherable directions here. In a clear, concise, but thorough manner Melissa Leapman walks her readers through her patterns step by step.
A note on sizing: Like "Hot knits" this book offers a range of sizes suitable for real women; most patters offer sizes from Small to XX-large. This is a real boon when you want to create items for others as well.
But the best part of the book is its appearance. Lots of lush, vibrant color on glossy pages where the information is clearly and systematically organized. Based on looks alone it gets you! After all, what good is a great pattern and a good picture if it isn't presented well? Here you will find several views for each piece, from those modeled by a person, to up close looks at the stich pattern, to the supremely important schematic.
Overall a fantastic book. Even if some of the patterns are not to your liking (a crochet sack/purse!) you doubtlessly know someone who will like those. Thank you Melissa! And keep up the good work!
