Book Review: Introduction to the Smorgasbord of Colleges Out There!

I gave this book 4 instead of 5 stars, because I would have liked to have seen a little more description of more schools, not just insets here and there. But Donald Asher at least tells you "what's out there" under many interesting categories of higher education that you probably didn't know existed.
In our society, we tend to think of colleges on a "linear scale" from not-so-great to better to best. Many popular ranking systems encourage this linear thinking, and it makes the college process a stressful "run for the roses" to see who can get into the "best" schools. Asher's book cogently makes the point that there are many qualitatively distinctive colleges out there: "Great Book" schools like St. Johns, "Work" colleges like Deep Springs, "Co-op" colleges like Northeastern and Kettering, "Block Plan" schools like Colorado College, and "Entrepreneurial" colleges like Babson.
Asher's book supports the idea that there are some "good fit" colleges out there for every student's interests, passions, and talents. It is just a starting point for further research, but it wakes you up to the possibilities!
