Book Reviews of Continental Drift (P.S.)

Book Review: Thy kingdom come
Summary: 5 Stars

Nearly the end of masterful "Continental Drift", its main character, a guy in his early thirties named Bob Dubois, sees `a large hand-painted sign that cries: The Kingdom of Heaven is at hand! Repent! Mathew 10:7". When he comes across this, his life - and the novel's narrative - has gone through many perils, ups and downs, and it is high time this man face his destiny - which will happen very soon and may include the Kingdom come, because from early when can feel him as a tragic hero.

For the reader, "Continental drift" is the chronicle of a foretold tragedy. From the beginning, in its opening pages, author Russell Banks alerts us this is a sad story - and it indeed is. It is about the American Dream, and how it shapes, for Americans and non-Americans, and how it dissolves. The writer paints lonely and depressive landscapes that recall Edward Hopper paintings. The characters in the novel are people struggling no to give up life, and to move on - even when all their hope is denied.

They are losers, but, more than that, they are human, very human dreaming of simple lives and simples dreams they can't make come true. Bob Dubois, his wife, kids, friends, and his eventual girlfriends are searching for better lives, and in this vain struggle they find anything other than better lives. Banks's narratives pulse with power investigating his characters' battles for better days.

The protagonist is a grown-up who, like a child, can't tell right from wrong, heaven from hell - but, deep inside he is a good man, despite his many emotional, material and moral issues. Although the story is set in the late 70's and early 80's, it is timeless, since Bob's quest overcomes time and places.

Bob's story is intertwined with the one of a Haitian woman named Vanise who moves from her country to United State - more specific for Florida, where she hopes to find a better life for her and her family. Sooner than later, these two narratives will find an intersection that resonates of the loss of their personal dreams, which may acquire gigantic, metaphorical proportions.

Banks's sure hand brings the reader portrays of lives in the edge of their existence. "Continental Drift" is a novel of epic proportions with an intimate narrative that shines a light on individual lives, and illuminates the whole human experience.

Summary of Continental Drift (P.S.)

A powerful literary classic from one of contemporary fiction's most acclaimed and important writers, Russell Banks's Continental Drift is a masterful novel of hope lost and gained, and a gripping, indelible story of fragile lives uprooted and transformed by injustice, disappointment, and the seductions and realities of the American dream.
