Book Review: A wonderful intro to content strategy
Summary: 5 Stars

As a project manager who pays (or at least attempts to pay) special attention to content, I started this book assuming it would be filled with great ideas, but ideas that are largely unimplementable in my world (a world where our company is understaffed, deadlines are unattainable, and content is, sadly, an afterthought). In some cases, I think I was right. But I was left with a glimmer of hope. Thanks to Halvorson's book, content strategy does seem doable, even in an organization where functionality and deadlines are the primary concerns, and standards for good content are, well, not even really established.

This book's greatest strength is its organization and user-friendliness, which speaks volumes for the cause. From page one, it provides a clear explanation of what content strategy means, and an overview what steps to take to implement a solid strategy for your organization or website. It's a short book and a really easy read, which means that it doesn't delve into the details, but as an introduction (which is basically what is served as, for me), it's perfect. If you don't have the time to finish it, you're struggling with how its principals might pertain to your company, or perhaps you already have a good basic knowledge of the what's and how's of content strategy, I strongly suggest you skip to the last chapter. This chapter really brought it home for me, and while Halvorson does take a pretty strong stance against traditional UXD, I found her views right on the money. My own personal challenge lies in how to give content strategy the attention it deserves if your company really is too short staffed to have anyone with enough bandwidth to really OWN the content. So for this reason, I'd love to see a follow up to this book. Perhaps a case study that explains exactly how this process was implemented for a specific company, the challenges that were met, and how they overcame those challenges. In the meantime though, I do plan to use this book to help support my case to my company; we are FAILING our users if we don't make content more of a priority!
