Book Reviews of Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister: A NovelBook Review: Challenge your perceptions of what a fairy tale is Summary: 5 Stars
Long internet-based discussions of beauty and how it is perceived (thanks to the fascinating telenovela, "Yo soy Betty, la fea" or "I'm Betty, the Ugly Girl", from Colombia), I wanted to explore the topic further. I stumbled across this book and recalling an old review from the Chicago Tribune, plunked down the credit card and said "yes".I've always been interested in the use of fairy tales as object lessons but this beautifully composed story was a real eye-opener. The world of the girls comes vividly to life and each character is exquisitely drawn.
Book Review: A great relaxing read! Summary: 5 Stars
I have read both of Maguire's books and loved them! Wicked was full of political intrigue and sometimes the plot was a bit undeveloped. But whatever problems he had with his first book were pleasantly absent from Confessions!!! This book flows with such ease that you can almost feel yourself in the scenes. Iris is every girl - someone who has dreams of being a success but is always in the shadow of someone else who seems to have everything and yet doesn't appreciate it! I loved this book and just can't wait for him to write #3!!! I highly recommend this book!
Book Review: Iris's life Summary: 5 Stars
This book starts in a prologue which sets the stage of 17th Century Holland. From the point of view of Iris, one of the "ugly stepsisters" in the tale of Cinderella, you learn of the hardships she has to overcome. She, her mute sister, and her cruel hearted mother flee to Holland to get away from the persecution of her mother in England. A series of event eventually lead to the epilogue where you learn about the truths and outcomes of all of the characters. It kept me on my toes and I never wanted to put it down!!! Read it. I've read it 3 times!
Book Review: A Must Read Summary: 5 Stars
This is my favorite Gregory Maguire book. However, I must caution that if you are like me and enjoy his style so much that you'd like to read all of his books, then I advise you to space them out (one every six months/books or so). His books are a great relief from normal contemporary paperbacks -and I think that's part of their magic. Read them too close together and they start to lose their ability to enthrall.
This book is a must-read for every girl and woman that has, at any time, fought with her mother!
Book Review: Two Parts Fun Summary: 5 Stars
"The Ugly Stepsister" is an amazingly fun retelling of the "Cinderella" story. Taking a lesson from the wildly awesome "Wicked" (a retelling of the "Wizard of Oz" saga), "The Ugly Stepsister" is one part parody and one part original. It succeeds as both new and retold fiction. I highly recommend "The Ugly Stepsister" on the same level as "Wicked", "My Fractured Life", "A Long Way Down" and "The Losers Club."
