Book Reviews of Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister: A Novel

Book Review: See "Cinderella" from a new and different view...
Summary: 5 Stars

I tend to like it when authors take traditional stories with famous protagonists and tell it all from another point of view (recent examples include The Red Tent, The History of the World in 10 1/2 Chapters). This book is no exception. In fact, it's intriguing because it shows that even in "fairy tales", things are not necessarily black and white. There isn't a good guy or a bad guy...just lots of grey folks in between (notice that the title is Confessions of an *Ugly* Stepsister, not a wicked one). Whole people, with virtues as well as faults. You end up having sympathy for just about every character in this tale. I think I'll be reading Wicked real soon.

Book Review: second instalment for me
Summary: 5 Stars

wow i just finished this book iwas fist turned onto meguire when i read wicked. i was just cureous to see if it was as good as wicked it turns out it was better the way he combines to different types of fantisy into one story was just awsome he combined the typical farytail with fantisy of a differnt world like impes witch are spoke of quit frequently in this book to me farytale fantisy and for lack of better words mythological fantisy such as imps are two different worlds.the way u find out how everything adds up to the ciderella story we all know and love and how twords the end it makes u think about how alike children really are like the parents.

Book Review: A GREAT GROWN-UP FAIRY TALE
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought this book last year from Amazon, and I just finished reading it. It's great, I love the illustrations, and the storyline is great. It's not just about Cinderella but it is also about her parents, step=mother, two ugly step-sisters, and the painter. I'm glad that Mr. Maguire told their side of the story as well, and not just Cinderella. I really enjoyed this book, and it kept me enthralled. It's a great all-around fairy tale from an adults point of view. This book rocks. I can't wait to read Lost, Wicked, and Mirror Mirror. I can't wait until I receive Son of a Witch. I just couldn't put this one down.

Book Review: don't be scared away by Wicked
Summary: 5 Stars

While searching on Amazon.com for reviews of Wicked, I saw that tons of them said that it was not approtate for children. Wicked was an amazing book, but i'll let parents decide weather or not to let there kids read it, because yes, there was some sex.

I though, do not want the readers of Wicked, the book or the reviews to be scared away from Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister. This book is 100% fine for kids. THere is NO sex what so ever, and the story is less complacated than Wicked. It is by no means boring, and it is a beautiful story that means so much more than Cinderella.

Book Review: Wonderful Retelling of the Cinderella Story
Summary: 5 Stars

I first read Gregory Maguire's "Wicked" which I found so clever and creative,I was anxious to read this one as well. After just finishing it, I have to say I liked this one even more. The fun of his books is the perspective he takes, eliciting sympathy for characters that we've grown up despising. "...Stepsister" like "Wicked" plays heavily on the ideas of the destructive side of parenting, and the psycholgical effects it has on it's recipients. It's also great fun to follow the story through what you know, and how his version will get to the fairy tale result.
