Book Reviews of Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister: A NovelBook Review: Completely Fantastic Summary: 5 Stars
After reading Wicked, and beginning Mirror, Mirror, I picked up Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister and immediately entered another world. Infusing classic fantasy with shocking reality, Maguire makes the story of Cinderella come alive. The characters have an incredible amount of depth; you really come to understand their virtues and flaws. The progression of different moods throughout the story will in turn excite you, break your heart, and then make you fall in love all over again. The characters are undeniably real, the setting fantastic, the themes intriguing, and the end leaves you thinking long after you put the book down. The moment I finished reading Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister I wanted to start it all over again. Confessions is one of the best books you'll ever read, and I suggest it to anyone.
Book Review: Wow! What some people do on their first date. Summary: 5 Stars
I loved this book and it was a quick read. I disagree with those that think this was better than Wicked. Don't get me wrong, this was great, but Wicked was, well wicked. This book is written in a sort-of-but-not-really Shakespearean like manner, but in this case easy to comprehend (Sorry not a Shakespear fan). And what is the true meaning of a Changeling?" I think there were many many different examples of this in Confessions. He's a smart writer that Maguire! Also, some of the characters are great. I can almost picture the Queen of the Hairy Chin Gypsies. I also thought is was great to have a gay character in this story, but then again I couldn't picture him with the Master. Great book, I would suggest any book club to read this - I can only imagine the discussions.
Book Review: Gregory Maguire is Undoubably Proving Himself Magical Summary: 5 Stars
I learned of Gregory Maguire when a friend recommended Wicked (which is fantabulous, by the way) and when I ordered Wicked, I orders Confessions... too. I read it in three days; I simply could not put it down. To those of you who feel strongly about the origional Cinderella story, you may not want to read this, but it does give a fabulous new point of view and twist on an old, worn story. I have been rather bored of late with the origional story, and after reading Wicked, (and of course the title of the book) I knew what the story would be covering - the side of the innocent stepsisters of Clara - Cinderella. The story is powerfully written and I felt every emotion with Iris, the main character. This is a truly wonderful story that would be a shame to pass up.
Book Review: Best of the Trio Summary: 5 Stars
I do not include LOST in the category of Maguire's best novels, since it is not like the other three. Having read all, however, I'd have to say COAUS was my favorite.I think if you read this book, you'd either love it or hate it. My mom tried reading it and couldn't get past the prologue. I read it, and bawled my eyes out in the epilogue. It was a bit slow, but that's the style of his books. From what I gather, you're supposed to savour every word and detail. Iris is incredibly likeable, as is her older sister (don't remember the name). I loved both the novel and stage adaptation of Wicked, and didn't think anything could beat it, but COAUS is my favorite book. Mirror Mirror was also thrilling, but there really wasn't much read there.
Book Review: A Real Surprise Summary: 5 Stars
This book took me by surprise. When I started to read it, I had to force myself to continue. It did not make sense in the beginning. The author uses some old fairy-tale style language. As I continnued to read, my interest continued to build. Before long, I could not put the book down and now I want to get his previous book "Wicked". I have a lot of admiration for the author. He had a very fresh and original style. He added quite a lot of twists to the story which really kept the reader guessing. It was quite a stimulating plot. This book reminded me of the stage I went through in elementary school when I read a lot of fairy tales. It was a very enjoyable stage.
