Book Review: "Conan begins"...

Heh, almost deserve "Several Sword Thrusts" for that line... But it's true...

Robert E Howard didn't make a "Complete" Conan history, just a bunch of very good stories. There's a lot of blanks left to fill in that various writers and artists have done for years in one adaptation after another.
I really loved this current generation of Conan stories, far surpassing previous ones I'd read from years ago. Technology has improved and comics are more a mainstream business now so they can afford to hire better artists who also can go at the comics as a serious art career, not just a hobby that turns into a profession. Also, newer Conan adaptations are by artists and writers inspired not just by Howard but by earlier writers and artists.
Thus, while it does a PERFECT adaptation of REH's "The Frost Giants Daughter", much of this volume is a fill in to set the stage for Conan and for him leaving Cimmeria. Howard's stories had no other Cimmerians, nor truly explained why he left (beyond a need for adventure) his homeland which being from a "Tribal" society is not done lightly.
The new series's "Hyperboria" is brilliant. I like beyond Conan reading about the "Real" lost lands and that sort of thing. The image in my head of Hyperborea is closer to Clark Ashton Smith who did far more work on it, but this one is a neat take on it. A race of superior sorcerers who seal themselves in their fortress and have limitless leisure and pleasure, but find that is a foe that might destroy them. Conan is unwittingly caught in this citadel of pleasure for the self-made elites and ultimately fails, and it's his failure that inspires him to reach other shores.
It's just a "Fill in the blank" story, but a necessary and very good one. Other blanks, like the "Bone Woman" in later issues I don't care for so much.
Overall, I'm amazed at this new series. If you have most of the issues and have "Ruined" their collector's value by reading them too much, no real need. But if you don't have them, or enshrine 'em in Mylar or missed a lot of issues these are well worth buying.
