Book Review: Great re-telling of the Conan mythos

If you read this in sequence, then Vol 0 (Born in Battle) should be read before this vol 1, which was conceived earlier.
The artwork here is completely different. It doesn't matter - the artwork is stunning in both volumes.
There are two storylines here. A re-telling of the Frost Giant's Daughter is familiar territory. I know other reviewers expect a tight fit to RE Howard's life of Conan synopsis and don't like excursions outside of this. But seriously, there were real gaps in Conan's timeline which should sensibly be filled in by additional material. Furthermore, how much more takes of the Frost Giant Daughter's storyline could be made interesting?
This is, in my own opinion, OLD stuff. Barry Windsor Smith and Roy Thomas have already done it. Now Busiek and Nord are redoing it. It still looks and feels the same. A simple plot device of having a beautiful damsel in distress lure Conan to his doom can only be done one way. The only difference is in the artwork. Nord's art is majestic but so was Smith's. The great thing about this new series is the way in which new material are inserted in to link up the gaps in Conan's chronology.
The Hyperborea story was beautifully told. The slave girl who trusted Conan with her life and unfulfilled promises made by Conan were brilliant open-ended devices, not seen in the earlier Conan series. I like this imperfect Conan.
