Book Review: Disappointing

This comic tells the story of King Conan on a quest to Khitai in search of trade.
I am disappointed with this story on several levels.
Chief of which is the complete improbability of the setting. Khitai is obviously modelled on Cathay (Ancient China). However, the writer has inserted Japanese elements into this story. The tortoise monster (a kappa) and the samurai clad killer are totally incongruous in this setting. Furthermore, the armour worn by the samurai is about 1500 years later than the presumed setting for Conan's fictional world which is in the dark ages or earlier. King Conan's bodyguards are dressed in Roman-Byzantine looking armour.
The plot is also extremely thin. King Conan rushes over to Khitai, tricked by a demoness over trading possibilities. The reason for the demoness visit to distant Aquilonia is because she finds Conan desirable and wishes to trick him into coming over to Khitai to substitute for her present samurai killer. I know that the series is built upon Conan as the main character but he should not be made the centre of the universe.
The really banal use of a parable about foxes and lions as told to the wounded Pallantides by some aboriginal shaman is extremely trite and boring. It also has no rationale link to the main storyline.
I disagree that the artwork was great. It was acceptable, looking amateurish and reminiscent of early Dark Horse comics.
