Book Reviews of Commodore Hornblower (Hornblower Saga)

Book Review: Another fabulous Hornblower adventure!
Summary: 5 Stars

I liked this novel tremendously. In this one, Hornblower is dispatched to the Baltic in command of a squadron of British vessels, as Britain's struggle with Napoleon nears its climax. Hornblower must deal with all of the usual problems of command, and additionally he must, in fact, also concern himself with high affairs of state. Forester combines these factors brilliantly into a facinating look at Europe during this time period.

I found this novel to be particularly vivid in its portrayal of Hornblower marauding about in the Baltic. You can practically feel the cold Baltic air, see the ice flows, hear the cannon, and see the armies ashore battling one another. Hornblower as usual is in the thick of things. This book in my opinion never drags although the storyline is somewhat more complex than the usual Hornblower novel.

Fans of Hornblower won't want to miss this one. And if you are not a Hornblower afficianado, then what are you waiting for?

Book Review: The only book I kept and loved and read 100 times.
Summary: 5 Stars

Some stories are brilliant (Ayn Rand "The Fountainhead") and some are important to read (Victor Hugo "Notre Dame de Paris"), but none are more pleasurable and inspiring than this one -- C.S. Forester's masterpiece of war and courage, Commodore Hornblower. It's approximately halfway in the complete Hornblower saga of 10 stories, tracing his career from midshipman to admiral, but Commodore Hornblower was written when the character was fully alive to the author and it inspired me beyond anything else I've ever read. If you're interested in the problem of leadership, it is essential reading.

Book Review: A Wonderful Friendship
Summary: 5 Stars

This is the next Hornblower chronologically, it was not the next one written. Now that the series is completed it makes sense to read it as Hornblower's career progresses in the Royal Navy.

The whole series is a pleasure to read full of action and adventure; with enough time for a little romance.

Get acquainted with one of the most popular characters in modern literature.

After reading this you will be back for more. And that is a wonderful thing.

Book Review: If you like this subject, they're a rewarding experience.
Summary: 5 Stars

Author sends you there and stands you next to the characters. Every five years or so I re-read the series, always memorable. Written in my fathers time (1940's believe), when readers may have been more demanding. C.S. Forester also wrote The African Queen.

Book Review: A lot of fun
Summary: 5 Stars

This book was great from start to finish. I have always loved this period of Naval history, and was really pleased with the acurate depiction of the British navy at this time. I recomend this book to people of all ages.
