Book Reviews of Coming Full CircleBook Review: Futuristic Tale of Conquests, Clashes, Justice, Romance, Peace Summary: 5 Stars
Christian McCallister writes a futuristic novel which includes adventure, drama, romance, intense human relationships, clashes and conquests, and eventual tranquility. It is an intriguing story right from the start. The reader is introduced to a handsome, well built man in his early thirties, who awakens in the woods without a memory. He begins scavenging for food, learns he can hunt game, recognizes edible fruits and berries and has a strong feeling he was a warrior. He finds a wound on his head and recognizes it caused his memory loss. Later, he finds a horse, believed to be his and also a sword. He begins a journey to find both himself and his purpose ... both of which he feels are related to a sword and a ring he obtained from a stranger who was crossing a rickety old bridge with a Guardian.
A new "Dark Ages" developed which plunged mankind back to living in city-states each of which had chosen different forms of government. Some were democratic, some monarchies combined with elected officials, and others were autocracies. I found this book imaginative, creative, and an intense and satisfying reading experience. It is filled with mystery, drama, romance, warriors fighting for justice, human interest which includes orphans who live in shelters, and well developed characters. The plot is amazing and fascinating ... The lost and lonely stranger discovered his identity. He is Paul Munising, a Prince and warrior who was sent on a mission by his father to conquer his brother Andrew who turned into an evil despot and terrorist among the city-states within the realm formerly known as Michigan. Andrew gathered a group of evil minded men to become his soldiers who stole, killed and otherwise harrassed local populations ... his goal was to conquer several city-states and rule them with his strong hand.
Paul Munising gathered a following, including two of his best friends from childhood with whom he learned his warrior skills. He needed to stop the evil perpetrated by his brother on innocent people ... He needed to bring peace and prosperity back to the innocent people. Along the way, he comes upon an orphan named Ridgeway, who joins his group and endears himself to Paul in ways unimaginable. The dialogue and action scenes are very true-to-life and believable as the story unfolds. There is an interesting character named Diana Almstad, also known as the Wolf Lady because she has an entourage of wolves who accompany her. There is a well done subplot about an unexpected romance to an unlikely character. She ends up ruling a region of land which was considered endangered. After Andrew's defenses weaken, the scenes where he escapes and wanders alone especially in the Dunes, later taken as an anonymous prisoner are excellent. The restoration of the realm of Galord which included a stay with the king and later a cabin at an Inn was an enjoyable chapter. Paul Munising falls in love with Princess Julia. Their romance is nicely worked into the plot. I love how the author used certain modern songs, considered to be ancient folk tunes within the story, such as ""Stand by Me", "Cats Cradle" and "Amazing Grace" the lyrics of which support the context of the plot where they are used, that is true creative genius! The author deftly ties together many of the subplots toward the end to bring about a very satisfying conclusion where there is peace in the territory now called "Mishigan", This is an outstanding first novel and I would love to read a prequel to the story which explains what happened to "Homo novus" or "New man" and why did they leave the earth? Where did they go? It would be a great adventure to understand the circumstances for their extreme and abrupt decision. Erika Borsos [pepper flower]
Summary of Coming Full CircleThe story is set approximately one thousand years from now, in a post-technological Michigan, that has been divided into many small kingdoms or city-states. Most of our technology is missing, and the story tells of how a portion of homo sapiens evolved into a new species, that left Earth behind. The story is about those still on Earth, with only passing references to the absentee new race. Specifically, the story tells of how an injured man awakens in a cave, with no memory of who he is, but with a sense that he has an urgent task to complete. As the man travels through Michigan, he gradually rediscovers, and partially recreates, himself, as well as rediscovering his mission. He encounters both allies and enemies, and eventually has a showdown with his nemesis, with the fate of several small kingdoms hanging in the balance. I tried very hard to make the showdown, and the nature of the conflict, and its outcome, different from what is seen in most good-versus-evil stories.
