Book Reviews of Comic Insights: The Art of Stand-Up ComedyBook Review: Not so much a comedy 'how-to' book but very worthwhile Summary: 5 Stars
I liked this book. I bought several at the same time. All the others were comedy 'how-to' books. I found them useful to varying degrees. This kind of surprised me in that it wasn't such a 'how-to' book. If I'd spent more time reading the preview, I'd have seen that it didn't pretend to be anything other than what it is - a collection of summarised experience from an indisputedly star-studded list of comedy noteables. A staggeringly varied list of comedians etc but with common themes running through their advice. I recommend this book to comedians who are serious about sticking at this for the long-term.
Book Review: LETS LEARN SOME COMEDY! Summary: 5 Stars
Ok, i've read em all, I've bought em all, I've seen em all.
And this book is one of the BEST books on the "ART" of stand up comedy.
Yes people, it is an art.
Franklyn has combined in depth interviews with successful comedians of the past 30 years, with his own insights from his 30 plus years in the biz.
This book doesn't force you to think or write a certain way.
Actually, it gives you advice on finding your original comedy voice from what you already have inside.
Unlike other books on comedy, these 'insights' are actually insightful.
Book Review: excellent book Summary: 5 Stars
excellent book, excellent interviews, very enjoyable read.
I liked Larry Wilde's book also. Each book covers different comedians, except Jerry Seinfeld who is in both I think.
I can't express how valuable these two books are to anyone who wants to do stand-up. It's just critically important. These interviews in these 2 books talk about all the hard questions that everyone has. Different styles of comedians, different perspectives. Helping you find out who YOU are. it's great. I really enjoyed this book a lot.
Book Review: I LOVED this book! Summary: 5 Stars
A wonderful, insightful, fascinating read. Won't tell you much about the business end of things, but who cares? Some of the biggest names in comedy give insight into the methods behind their madness. Almost didn't want to say I liked it b/c I don't need the competition in the clubs (there are more than enough of us new hopefuls to go round as it is) but ultimately it all comes down to talent, so, read away if you think you've got the stomach to be a comedian, and read anyway if you love comedy. Thank you Mr. Ajaye!
Book Review: EXCELLENT!! Summary: 5 Stars
Of all the comedy books I own, this has truly been not only the most helpful for a comedian, but also the most entertaining because of the comedians interviewd. Franklyn Ajaye asked all the questions anyone would want to know who's considering a career in stand-up comedy and also tells you the major elements that make a good comedian. Even if your just a fan of comedy, you get to hear from the best, their stories and what it took to make them great. I loved it and have read it 3 times.
