Book Reviews of Come As You Are: The Story of NirvanaBook Review: Nirvana's Best Biography Summary: 5 Stars
Nirvana was the band of this decade. It spoke to disillusioned youth and to a society being raped by the information age. Although this book was authorized by the band, the honesty shines through. Kurt Cobain was a sad, but poetic man, who deserved more than to be chewed up the way he was. His final, desperate act does not negate the loving father, the brilliant songwriter, and the passioned singer that he was. Michael Azerrad did a wonderful job in writing about this band and its rise and fall. If you don't think Kurt Cobain and Nirvana have no relevance, think again. The recent school shootings in Oregon and elsewhere show a youth on the brink of despair, and just when we need Kurt the most, he is gone. "Come as we are," indeed.
Book Review: Refreshingly Honest Summary: 5 Stars
Although Azzerand became friends with the band (espeically Kurt) in the course of the interview, it remains balanced, frank and netural. Too many of the Nirvana and.or Kurt Cobain books out on the market should be used as toliet paper, so I was really pleaserd to read this one. I really felt for Kurt and Courtney through all of the legal procedings and got the impression that they were just like many other couples--excluding the rich rock star thing. One other thing that jumps out, is the frequent and loud denunciation of anybody who is racist, sexist and/or homophobic. Few of the current big name bands inspired by Nirvana can claim such exemplarly conduct. Ditto for the modesty and admittance of imperfections and flaws.
Book Review: my FAVORITE book Summary: 5 Stars
this was truely the best book i have EVER read. i was starting to drift away from nirvana & was going on a trip to florida, needing a book to read. as soon as i read the first line i couldn't put it down. i tell everyone to read it. my boyfriend Jim is reading it my copy right now(w/the final chapter)! it's his fav. book also. if you get the chance you HAVE to read it, it's worth staying up late & having no social life for however long it takes to finish. when i got to the end i actually started crying!! i had to keep stopping because i was balling so hard. it was about 2 or 3 in the morning & i woke up my sister(her room is next to mine). don't get scared off by the thickness. Once again-you MUST read this book.
Book Review: One word: Wow! Summary: 5 Stars
This book accurately displays Kurt and the band, not just as a fad of music, not just as a band, but as a movement in the culture brought into the United States. Before Nirvana, there were 30 alternative stations in America. After Nirvana, there are now well over 150. They simply swept the nation in their unglorifying music. Only brought out by the musical genius of Kurt Cobain. Michael brings out the truth about the band. Rather than what the people want to hear, and what the parents want to hear, so that they can tell their children "He was a sick man, who used drugs". It also shows the affects of the modern and Seattle GRUNGE society on one person. Long live Nirvana. Long live Kurt Cobain.
Book Review: I've Read The Book 5 times Summary: 5 Stars
Come As You Are: The Story Of Nirvana, by Michael Azzerad is the most comprehensive and honest book that I have ever read regarding Kurt Cobain and Nirvana. Compared to others such as Kurt Cobain,Who Killed kurt Cobain, etc. CAYA, is by far the best. It shows Kurt in a way that the other books different it portrays him like he really was I think, and given that Kurt helped Azzerad with the writing of the book just makes it better. I never put the book down, i read it in the duration of about two days every time and loved every single page. I highly reccomend this book to anyone who wishes to accumulate more knowledge regarding the band or to someone who already knows a lot and simply just wants an excellent read.
