Book Reviews of Come As You Are: The Story of NirvanaBook Review: The best on Nirvana Summary: 5 Stars
This book is exactly what it says it is, the story of Nirvana. Where many books state half-truths, generalize about everything, and make out Kurt Cobain to be Nirvana, this book tells it like it truly was.Nirvana wasn't just Cobain, Grohl and Novoselic. Many people were involved to make it happen. Drummers, bassists, and guitarists that were or could have been all have their say. This book is as honest as you can get, right from the horse's mouth (that is partially dictated by Kurt Dave, Krist and other former members). It tells the truth behind the insane drug rumors, and all. From the day Kurt Donald Cobain was born until the day he died this book tells the truth and nothing but. It is a book that you can read 20 times and still appreciate and learn. Sick of the generalization of the Seattle movement? Find out how it really was in Come As You Are. The Nirvana Story.
Book Review: Insightful Summary: 5 Stars
I saw a clip of Kurt Cobain where he mentioned this book in an interview after it had been published and he said something along the lines of he had read the first 2 chapters of the book and realized he needed to learn to keep his mouth shut. He really does open up and give a very intimate view of his life, especially his childhood and relationship with his family in this book. I know much of the story is edited and there is always a slant given by the author, but I felt the book was very insightful and answered many questions I had about Kurt, his music, and his struggles. I have not read the other biographies yet so I cannot compare them, but if you would like to hear about Nirvana and Kurt through Kurt's voice, I recommend this book. Its really a privelege to hear him talk so candidly. When I got near the end I didn't want to finish it because I didn't want him to stop talking.
Book Review: Probably the best Nirvana book.. Summary: 5 Stars
Come as You Are was written before Kurt Cobain's death in 1994, so it isn't focused on the tragedy of it, rather on his life leading up to the event. Its a very candid look at his happy beginnings and how his life at home deteriorated and the refuge he found in music. Nirvana went though many drummers and musicians before finally settling on Dave Grohl. This book portrays Kurt like he was: a pained musician who didn't want nor know how to handle his sudden fame. Come As You Are is personal, funny, and intriguing. After reading it, I started thinking more about their music and the impact they made on the industry. Any fans of the band would probably love this, or even if you're not, it has an up close look at the music world of record labels, fame, fortune, touring, and all the work that goes into the production. Definitely worth reading. It also has some good photos.

Book Review: Kurt was just a punk rocker!!! Summary: 5 Stars
Other books I have read made Kurt to be anything from a junkie or a no talent-lucky punk from seattle. It may be true if one just looked on the outside, and if you only listen to the one sided journalists but in my eyes and in the eyes of many others Kurt was a kid like the rest of us but he found a way to escape the pain of todays reality. Through his music he found a way out of our simple closeminded world. Unfortunatley that sense of freedom didn't last for him. Come as You are at the time of its release was just a biography about a larger then life band. After Kurt's death though it became a personal journal of sorts. A way to understand how someone who seemed to have everything could have done what he did. I am in no way condoning what he did. But in all of our hearts we can understand and pray he is at peace.
