Book Reviews of Collage UnleashedBook Review: My first collage book and alot of fun Summary: 4 Stars
This book got me into art journaling and collage. The techniques at the beginning of the book were easy to experiment with and cheap to invest in. I love the play of color and the idea of leveraging my work with scanning, photocopies and manipulating my digital copies in computer programs. The paper towel dye technique is well explained with many options for staining papers with the dyed towels and collaging the towels onto paper backgrounds. This versatile technique and its possibilities are so well explained and so inexpensive that I was a bit disappointed to discover the variety of materials and cost of tools needed for the rosin paper/ gesso technique and crayon technique. I did not know what rosin paper was or what a "creamy" crayon was or how to find the two irons needed for the crayon cupcakes. Some brand names would have helped there. I also did not see enough of the doodling and writing techniques as I would have liked. As for the finalized projects, I felt that dropping the "big sack" in favor of more thorough instructions on the latch hooked book cover would have been preferable. Overall though, I loved the book and am a Traci devotee. I now own her dvd and have taken a class in person with her. Many other reviewers have said that "younger" people would be attracted to the book but I think it is just a beginner's guide for those who have dabbled in scrapbooking, card making or general crafting. It was for me.
Book Review: A solid book, with lots of inexpensive tips Summary: 4 Stars
I found this artist likes to use more traditional art supplies in her work (crayons, crayola markers, tissue paper) - which makes sense given her background. This means that a lot of the projects will be inexpensive and easy for you to try, unlike some of the other projects where you have to buy 10 different inks, special pads, many stamps, sealers, and special papers, just to try something.
I found her paper towel techniques really interesting as they allow you to cheaply try a bunch of handcoloring techniques. Still, to make art like hers, instructions will only get you so far; you have to have a natural talent. For example, her lettering and doodling techniques only can be replicated if you naturally are a doodler and into lettering; in other words you really can't teach someone to create some of the images she does right out of her head. If original art isn't your thing, you may want to try books that go into altering existing images. All in all, a solid, creative book, with lots of easy and inexpensive techniques to try.
Book Review: Fun & funky Summary: 4 Stars
Tracy inspires you to get your hands inky and have a ball! I recently took an all-day class with Tracy in which we made the "Big Sac" featured in this book. The time just flew by, we all had a blast, and I get tons of compliments on my finished bag. I spent another day dyeing paper towels, which are so much fun to use in collage. These projects are perfect for someone who is just getting into collage and doesn't want to use "precious" materials - for the price of a roll of paper towels and a few dye re-inkers, you can make wonderful art and have a great time doing it!
Book Review: Collage for Everyone Summary: 4 Stars
This is a really wonderful book and the ideas that Traci Bautista gives are fresh and original. I love her 'girlie girls' and how simple her collage ideas are to do. Nothing in the book is beyond even the novice like me to do.
I would recommend this book to anyone who wants fresh inspiration, fantastic colors and easy ideas to wake up their own collage or altered art projects.
