Book Reviews of Cold Sassy Tree

Book Review: A "Must Read"--If You've Already Read It, Read It Again--It Gets Better With Age
Summary: 5 Stars

Good Book. A damn good book. A five-star rating is not enough. This is a 10-star rating or better...

Full of homespun "down home" theology, philosophy and humor, good for any age and any time.

The times, places and names may change, but this is a story and a book for the ages. This a story of the heart, family and questions and values that really matter.

A story of family, love and endurance during a period of change-- personal change, family change and communal change.

This is an Old South love story of the first and highest degree.

And it gets better with age. Many, if not most, read "Cold Sassy" 20 or so years ago when it first came out. Read it again. You have changed, your perspective on life and what matters have changed and that deepens the meaning, depth and attraction of this book.

Damn, this was a good book. Like fine wine it has gotten better, much better, with age and the depth of our human experience.

And if you want to think about theology, there's better theology here than in many "religious" books you'll read, and its far more fun reading it here than in those serious, lifeless, funless tomes! Good theology here. Try it, you'll like it...and Grampa might even answer some of your own deep thought questions.

This is a good'un folks, a keeper, now and forever...

Book Review: I'd Love to Visit Cold Sassy Tree
Summary: 5 Stars

This is a wonderful story with surprise upon surprise. The simplicity of human nature is interwoven with the complexities of relationships at all levels. Life is a simple tapestry that is woven to reveal deep roots.

The story is written in a southern dialect. It is about Tweedy and his grandfather. Three weeks after his grandmother's death, Will's grandpa marries Miss Love, about half his age. The scandal that envelops Cold Sassy Tree is a sight to behold. We also have bossy Aunt Loma married to a nincompoop who kills himself while wrapped in plastic so as not to leave a mess for his wife to clean up.

The story is delightful and humorous but also tragic. It's about a young man's coming of age and an old man's love of life. It is filled with wonderful characterization, imagery and dialogue.

Book Review: I'm sorry I waited so long to read this!
Summary: 5 Stars

So many people read this book in high school or college, but for some reason, I was never required to do so. I don't know what made me pick up this book so much later in life, but I am so glad that I did. This is a wonderful, beautifully written, heart felt story that will stay in your memory forever. It is clear why it is considered a classic. In short, the story is that Will grows up in a quaint little Georgia town in the early 1900's. He learns about life, love, and loss through his grandfather, his grandfather's new young wife, and their life stories. You will taste the southern food, smell the dust in the old store, and feel the heartache. It's all very vivid. Great story. I am so sorry that Olive Ann Burns did not live long enough to bless us with more wonderful novels.

Book Review: At Home In Cold Sassy
Summary: 5 Stars

I purchased COLD SASSY for fun because I share the name of the main character and was delighted with what I encountered. Olive Ann Burns certainly had the ability to draw readers into the story. It is impossible not to engage with the characters and feel like you've lived in Cold Sassy yourself. Elements of surprise and suspense are woven throughout the book, keeping you reading. You definitely know you are "down south" in the early part of the 20th century because of the accents in the dialogue, the amusing anti-Yankee attitude and the sprinkling of current events, like fashion and the new fangled automobile. You too will want a hat made especially for you by Miss Love!

Book Review: Truly, a great book
Summary: 5 Stars

This book was such a delight. It was so wonderfully written that it really took me back to my childhood and brought back so many memories of my grandfather and the area where I grew up. This book has been on my book shelf since 1985, and I would not read it because some of the events in the beginning of the book were too close to home. It was chosen as a "book club" selection and everyone just raved about how wonderful it was....so I sucked it up and read past the first 100 pages. What a treat! With all the sadness in the book, there are many more things that make you laugh out loud. Please read this book, you will not be DISAPPOINTED!
