Book Reviews of Cold Mountain

Book Review: A Journey Worth Taking
Summary: 5 Stars

Simply put, Charles Frazier's debut novel is about 'going home'. Written with a pace and tone that evokes images of gray bleakness and stark countryside, Cold Mountain resonates with hope in the ugliest of arenas--the Civil War. But this is not a war novel. It's a story of human triumph against the fiercest of odds. That being said, Cold Mountain is not a page-turner. It's a book that at times feels as difficult and cumbersome to get through as the journey of the main character. But it's more than worth the effort. Frazier's prose makes you feel the bitter North Carolina winter down to your bones, the fear & anxiety of being hunted, the steadfast desire to be with your lover and the gut-wrenching resolve to fight your way home. A 'must' for any serious reader. Salmon Run

Book Review: I rarely give 5 stars...
Summary: 5 Stars

I chose to read this book like I choose to sneak a bowl of ice cream late at night; a sort of guilty pleasure. I was not disappointed. I found the story compelling and the characters engaging. I finished in half the time I expected, as I found myself sneaking away from life to indulge. I enjoyed it as much as anything I've ever read from Hemingway, and in much the same way.

I listened to this one (from Audible), and while many complained at the author's reading of his own book I couldn't imagine a better way to experience it. As someone raised in the rocky mountains, for three days I found myself describing the world around me in Charles Frazier's twangy, metered, and gentle southern voice.

Book Review: MARVELOUS HISTORICAL ROMANCE
Summary: 5 Stars

One of the most romantic books I have ever read, Cold Mountain is a slow, sweeping epic of a slice of American history. Heartsick and disillusioned, Inman, a Confederate soldier gravely wounded at Petersburg, decides to walk home to the Blue Ridge Mountains. He longs for Ada, the preacher's daughter he left behind. He longs for healing from the war's physical and spiritual ravages. His trip takes him through the turmoil and insanity of the time. While Inman makes the almost impossible journey home, Ada fights for her life. Raised to make polite conversation and sketch, she must find the means for survival within herself. Winner of the National Book Award. National Best Seller.

Book Review: Where Are The Banners and the Flags?
Summary: 5 Stars

This is a book that tells what the Civil War was really like. None of that emotional rhetoric and stirring drum and bugle stuff. This was life. Most southerners didn't have slaves, most didn't want the war and most were caught up in a world and circumstances they wanted no part of, but could not control and barely influence.

They were not disloyalists. They were not traitors. Just people trying to scratch out a way to get by. This book is exceptional in describing and detailing those lives and the horrors brought on by an especiallly brutal war.

Read this book, then, talk about the glories of war and the Glorious Lost Cause!! I can't be done!!

Book Review: If You Haven't Seen the Movie, Don't!
Summary: 5 Stars

This beautifully-crafted tale deserves your imagination, not preconceived notions based on movie stars playing the characters. "Cold Mountain" is a story of redemption and love. While leisurely paced, there enough twists and turns to keep you on the edge of your seat. Don't let the slow start fool you - there's plenty here to keep you turning the pages including detailed descriptions of historic events, complex characterizations, and a growing desire to see the lovers reunited. Expect to settle in for a while to let the magic of the imagery wash over you.
