Book Reviews of Civil War

Book Review: Undeniable facts and harsh realities
Summary: 4 Stars

There are three things in this series that are undeniable:
1. Fantastic artwork
2. Lasting Story Line
3. Political agenda

No matter what you think or feel about our current political situation in the world and no matter what stance the author has and it trying to make you cannot let that dictate your feelings on a lasting story within the MU.
Were this some non-fiction commentary on our own government I would probably have a few choice words.
However: ITS FICTION! techniquely and I refuse to let old sentimentalities tie me down and make me hate Marvel for what they have done.
Grats to them for taking everything from Disassembled and House of M to such a breaking-point. (can I be more ambiguous on where I stand on this series?)
My overall point is why fight what has already been done (hmmm now I better be careful I sound like Tony Stark.)
For Spidey fans: lets just be greatful they didn't bring Gwen Stacey back from the dead again.... that's a whole can of worms that shouldn't be touched unless their gonna kill Spidey off forever!

Book Review: Part of a Larger Story?
Summary: 4 Stars

With the revelations in New Avengers #31 (Elektra's a shape-shifting alien Skrull!), the Marvel Civil War may take on an entirely new meaning. Maybe.

As Brian Bendis said in an interview with Comic Book Resources, "People who spent good money on 'Civil War' and now 'World War Hulk' can rest assured -- as promised that those events happened unto themselves... Whatever the plan afoot is for the Skrull Empire, 'Civil War' certainly helped it. They let it happen. They were sort of like, 'Oh you guys want to beat the s**t out of each other?' Go ahead.'"

On its own, fans were overall pretty disappointed in the conclusion to Civil War--itself just a set-up to the death of Captain America in Captain America #25. (That's right--the "money shot" here isn't even included in this collection!) I don't think it would disappoint anyone to see a Tony Stark shapeshift into a Skrull--in fact, it would actually help explain quite a bit of his bizarre, out-of-character behavior since the start of the Civil War.

Book Review: A Perfect Superhero Story Marred By An Uneven Finish
Summary: 4 Stars

People take a lot for granted with this story. The impact of Capt. America going against the American government had huge impact, but people were quick to take it for granted. It had some of the most well choreographed action sequences in the history of the medium and it asked a very important question: Whose side are you on? It got repeated ad nauseum, so seeing it here AGAIN has probably made you a little ad nauseous, but it sparked more debate than any comic in recent history, and more REAL debate, not just "Could Black Adam REALLY fight Superman?"-style debates. The ending is an overly sentimental and extremely abrupt "real heroes" message, that does, sadly, somewhat detract from the rest of the story, but it's still worth reading if for no other reason than Marvel has actually stuck with the ending for so long.

Book Review: Who's Side Are You On?
Summary: 4 Stars

The Super Human Regisrtation Act has passed through congress and now any superhero not willing to register and work for the government is an outlaw and a renegade. Iron Man is for the initiative after a reality TV show of mid-level superheroes tries to capture a nest of bad guys and turns a neighborhood into Hiroshima, killing hundreds, including children. Captain America is against the initiatie and believes it to be a facist movement being born. Conflicts arise! Oh yeah! Hero vs. hero. This is the stuff great comic books are made of. See Spder-Man reveal his true identity on national TV! See The Punisher just waste bad guys without remorse! See the entire Marvel Universe torn down the middle! Killer artwork and killer story!

Dig it!

Book Review: One book to bring them all and in teh darkness bind them
Summary: 4 Stars

The problem with this book is that it gives you a birdseye view of the events of the Civil War that shook the Marvel Universe, but to fully understand all the plotlines and references you'll have to lay down some more cash and get the other Civil War Collections. Actually to fully understand everything you read here you'll have to go back to before the civil war and ... Oh you get the idea.

So, this book is essential in that it sets the new statis quo for the MU, but also frustrating (all though marketing-wise very smart) as you'll just have to know the rest of the story.
