Book Review: A Whale of a Tale
Summary: 4 Stars
Vandermeer created a very interesting city with a very absorbing (if unresolved) mystery. I'll have to start leaving mushrooms out of my spaghetti sauce, though. The characters were weird enough to satisfy me and flawed enough to be interesting. There were more Madmen than Saints - no surprise there. Fortunately, I have a habit of checking all books for end material. The addition of a glossary was a good idea (though not required reading and incomplete).
Now for the negatives. The book started great and the first half had me involved. The second half went downhill though. Much of it added little to the "story". A map of Ambergris would have greatly helped this book.
All in all, this was fun to read and I'll be reading more of his books.
