Book Reviews of City of Bones (Mortal Instruments, Book 1)Book Review: It is much to know that poetry has been written this very day Summary: 5 Stars
So, I've finished City of Bones - and I just want to say that it was everything I thought it was going to be: an amazing, intricate story that keeps you on the edge of your seat, biting your fingernails.
God - where to begin? I loved the twist, of course, but more than that I loved the clues which were placed along the way. There were just enough of them (the lock of blond hair, the mention of Jace's hair color, that Jocelyn and Valentine were supposedly dead) so that revealed over time, it seemed almost coincidental. But, of course, nothing is coincidence, right?
The Characters. I loved them all. Simon who is just there, along for the ride, because he loves Clary and he doesn't want to lose her and be left behind. Jace with his daddy issues and his Shadowhunter Code. Isabelle who's always been around boys and doesn't really know what to do with Clary, how to react to her. Alec who has had to take care of Jace and rely on him and protect him. The dynamic between Isabelle and Alec and Jace is amazing - it's no wonder they react to Simon and Clary the way that they do. It's only ever been the three of them and they've had to battle demons for God's sake - no wonder they're as close as they are. And I loved the contrast between their relationship and Simon and Clary's relationship. There's something more open about Simon and Clary's friendship in spite of the fact that they don't spend as much time together as Isabelle, Jace and Alec do. Simon is able to tell Clary that he loves her - Alec can't even admit to himself he loves Jace, it seems. And Jace isn't able to tell Isabelle and Alec about Hodge's betrayal but Clary tells Simon everything about what happened - including that Jace is her brother.
And, of course, there is the plot. More than what's going on now, presently, there is an entire back story that is just as interesting and just as important as Clary's journey now. It's an amazing secondary world the author has created - with demon-fueled motorcycles and portals to other worlds - but, possibly what I love about this the most is that it's taken this secondary world and meshed it together with real life. Feeling like you don't really know your parents, like maybe there is more to the story then they've told you - who doesn't go through that? I loved the beginning when Clary is out with Simon and her mother is calling and she let's it go to voice mail. Who hasn't been in her place? By including moments like these the author has made it even more possible to become lost in her world.
This novel is more than a novel - it's an experience, an adventure you don't even need to leave your house for.
I really can't say enough good things about this. I just want to give it the biggest compliment I can - this inspired me to write. I'm sure you know that there is no better feeling than reading a wonderful book and having the need to do it for yourself - to write lines like "I said his poetry was terrible. It sounds like he ate a dictionary and started vomiting up words at random" or moments like Clary and Jace share at the end.
Thank you, thank you, thank you.
Summary of City of Bones (Mortal Instruments, Book 1)When fifteen-year-old Clary Fray heads out to the Pandemonium Club in New York City, she hardly expects to witness a murder?much less a murder committed by three teenagers covered with strange tattoos and brandishing bizarre weapons. Then the body disappears into thin air. It?s hard to call the police when the murderers are invisible to everyone else and when there is nothing?not even a smear of blood?to show that a boy has died. Or was he a boy? This is Clary?s first meeting with the Shadowhunters, warriors dedicated to ridding the earth of demons. It?s also her first encounter with Jace, a Shadowhunter who looks a little like an angel and acts a lot like a jerk. Within twenty-four hours Clary is pulled into Jace?s world with a vengeance, when her mother disappears and Clary herself is attacked by a demon. But why would demons be interested in ordinary mundanes like Clary and her mother? And how did Clary suddenly get the Sight? The Shadowhunters would like to know. . . . Exotic and gritty, exhilarating and utterly gripping, Cassandra Clare?s ferociously entertaining fantasy takes readers on a wild ride that they will never want to end.
