Book Review: A walk in the ancient woods

As strange a series title as "Chronicles of Ancient Darkness" sounds, I am beginning to find these books examples of great YA literature of the present time. I adored the first book, I adored this sequel, and I cannot wait to get to the rest of Torak's prehistoric story, this time searching for the cure to a mysterious disease plaguing the Clans. This is a brilliant continuation of the first book that takes us deeper into the mystery of the Soul Eaters and Torak's connection to them. Michelle Paver has very much researched her writing, and the story is as believable as a legend from a textbook (I mean this very much as a compliment). Her writing is lush without being extravagant and brings to present time the beautiful and dangerous world millenia gone. I would recommend this series to anyone with a taste for adventure and a dash of magic.Book Review: Great Book!

This book is the second book in the Chronicles of Ancient Darkness Books. It tells of the great sickness that spreads throughtout the forest to the clans. Torak journeys his way through the forest and across the sea, to find the cure. It tells of a mysterious ability that Torak has and it will keep you wanting to read more to find out what happens in the end. If you have read the first book Wolf Brother like it, then you will want to read this book!Book Review: slow

I read this (and the previous book) to my son (9 y.o.). We both loved it. We constantly shared ideas about the possible explanations of the events in the book and the possible outcomes. Great bonding experience!Book Review: Not watered down

When I first heard about the Chronicles of Ancient Darkness series it was through this book. I was drawn to it because a rave review from my favourite local bookstore, but also because the cover art looked so Pacific Northwest. It is, in fact, supposed to be set in a more nordic setting, but I couldn't help but think of ancient times in my own backyard San Juan islands. Hey, we have Orcas too, you know. Once again Torak, Renn and Wolf must vanquish a terrible evil that threatens the Forest, and this time their trek leads them to the Sea. Michelle Paver's dedication to first-hand research made the setting come alive for me, and I saw many elements of Haida and Inuit cultures sprinkled throughout the novel, but never too heavy-handed, which was refreshing. Although these book are a little predictable, I still enjoy being transported to a fresh-scented outdoor world filled with spirits, demons, and lots of adventure. I put this in the "Mist of Avalon" catagory, but I would liken it most to Clan of the Cavebears.
