Book Review: Thank you for a wonderful series
Summary: 4 Stars

Like "Old Boys," this story looks back and fills in gaps from books past read. And, even though the story is a simple one without multiple plots (which is why I give it a weak four stars), the first part of "Christopher's Ghosts" put a knot in my stomach -- I found it quite realistic and a bit unsettling. The second part ended with some satisfaction and predictability; however, it was with a touch of melancholy that the protagonist remains a lonely figure.

I've now read all seven books within a short time, and need to keep in mind that the series began 37 years ago. If McCarry were to write another Paul Christopher novel, I'd like to read more about his mother Lori's experiences during the many decades when she was on her own. So, please, Charles McCarry, how about another fix?

Do read the series in order: The Miernik Dossier (1971), The Tears of Autumn (1974), The Secret Lovers (1977), The Last Supper (1983), Second Sight (1991), Old Boys (2004), and Christopher's Ghosts (2007).

Summary of Christopher's Ghosts

With Christopher's Ghosts, a novel that's cinematic scope and penetrating depth transcend the bounds of even the greats works in its genre, Charles McCarry has surpassed his own matchless reputation as an espionage novelist. The grand tale begins in Europe in the late thirties, where a young Christopher and his family are struggling against the rise of Nazi totalitarianism in Berlin, even as he wrestles with a doomed love affair and bears witness to an unspeakable atrocity committed by a remorseless S.S. officer. The action spans oceans and time to the height of the Cold War in Europe, when the S.S. man emerges out of the ruins of postwar Germany to destroy the last living witness to his crime.
