In 1987, when I was spending my first married Christmas in the U.S. away from home (and was, not incidentally, married to a Jewish man, with whom I'd celebrated a previous Christmas in Europe) my mother sent me this book, and I laughed hysterically. Every page rang true, and as my husband attempted with me to establish an American interfaith holiday celebration, we both giggled over the well-illustrated pages, involving pigs, hippos, bears, and turkeys though they did.
If you're an ordinary WASP/Catholic who grew up in the 50's/60's and were the child of couples who did their best to make Christmastime a great, weeks-long experience (cookies, clothes, cards, tree-buying and decorating angst, gift-wrapping issues, parties, visits to department store Santas, etc.) this book will work for you. I pull it out every year on Thanksgiving night, in order to get myself into the mood for Christmas. I love it in every way, and I always find new details in the illustrations that make me laugh.
Two years ago, I sent a e-mail to Sandra Boynton's website asking whether she might consider doing an update of this wonderful book. Her assistant replied that that would never happen, and I was left saddened. This is my favorite of her publications, and my guess is that an update -- with more sophisticated computer references, a touch more multiculturalism, and perhaps a few funny pages about Christians and Jews (and maybe Muslims) coping with our annual December madness -- would play very well.
I can only hope.
Summary of Christmastime
Written in the same vein as "Chocolate: The Consuming Passion" by the same author, this book describes Christmas time as starting in August and going on till July.
