Book Review: Pearl of Great Price

I originally purchased this book for my sister and she loves it. So I thought I would try it since I needed more in my prayer life. This is a fantastic prayer form if you want to pray the same prayers as the ordained clergy only without all of the hours. I can't say enough about this book. It certainly has changed my prayer life for the better. You will not be disappointed.
Takes some getting used to as to where to place the ribbons for easy access. I originally had all the ribbons placed except one, so I called my sister and she helped in re-setting the ribbons.
You just have to buy one and see for yourself how much you can immerse yourself in this form of prayer life. It is the BEST for those who are working throughout the day; morning prayer before work, day time prayer at lunch, evening prayer after dinner, and night prayer before retiring.
Book Review: A Great Way to Pray

I became interested in the hours while reading Ellis Peters' Cadfael novels. I did some research and discoved that not only was this form of prayer still alive today, but Vatican II has encouraged that it be prayed beyond religious communities by the laity.
This book contains the complete Morning, Evening and Night Prayers with an abridged Daytime Prayers and Office of the readings. The abridged Office of the Readings would be the only drawback this book has, there is only a sample of the daily readings. I will eventually get the four volume version which has them all. Because of work, I may only get an opportunity to pray Daytime Prayer once a day, so I haven't any problems here.
What does it do? You are closer to God by praying the hours because you are praying with the inspired scripture of God. About 90 percent of the hours is taken directly from scripture. Each morning starts up with an uplifting reading of Psalm 95 (Come let us sing to the Lord, and shout with joy...}. I find that I can't wait for the next time I pray. Evening Prayer comes at the time of day when it is time to start slowing down. Each day ends with Night Prayer which puts me at peace. I find regular prayer brings us closer to God and helps keep me on the straight and narrow.
Some people find it difficult at first to keep track of the days and prayers and the five bookmarks. There is a handy booklet that comes with it that is published each year that tells you what pages each day of the year's prayers are located. A new version is published each year, it costs about two bucks. In a week or two you will be used to the order and how to locate prayers and readings for those days and it will be much simpler. There are also a number of books that will help you pray this and also with commentary on the Psalms.
I know Anglicans/Episcopalians and Lutherans pray a similar litergy. I would recommend this to any Christian or any denomination. As the readings are all scripture based, it should be used to bring us all closer to God.
Book Review: Changed my prayer life

When I began to pray the LOH (morning & evening prayer) I began to realized what prayer was intended to be - Praise and Worship. The exposure to the Psalms, Canticles and scripture readings have helped make made God present in my life. Even when I pray alone there is comfort knowing that the rest of the church is also praying the same prayers. The LOH also helped me to experience church in a broader sense - (brothers and sisters in Christ). It has transormed my prayer life. I went from a laundry list of wants (me) and now focus on Him and my brothers and sisters. It takes a few times to get the format down, however it is well worth the effort. I HIGHLY recommend praying the LOH if you are searching for deeper waters. Book Review: Not just for priests and nuns

I had been looking for a way to add to my prayer collection and this is a wonderful way to do it. It is a little confusing at first but with the help of the INCLUDED St. Joseph's guide I'm finding my way around this lovely book. Do not bother buying a separate St. Joseph's guide because one is included in the box. Don't be discouraged by the confusing layout at first. It will make sense very soon whether you teach yourself or have someone teach you.

This version of the Liturgy of the Hours is far better than the shorter version. It contains all the feast day readings and a selection of regular readings. If you want to go deeper into the Office of Readings you would do better with the complete four volumes of the Liturgy of the Hours.
