Book Review: 'whatever is born into this world....is born to die'

Anne Rice's 'Christ The Lord - Out of Egypt' has sat on my bookshelf for nearly four years now. Having read all of the vampire and witch novels, the ghost novels, and my favorite of her books (Cry To Heaven), I followed Rice in her transfer from the realm of the supernatural to the realm of the spiritual.
The day I purchased this work, however, I read roughly three pages, and then closed it, placed it on my shelf, and lamented that I had lost one of my favorite authors, as she claimed to have completely finished the tales of the vampires and witches, and would write no more. I was saddened, as the opening of this book failed to interest me at all, and frustrated me beyond belief, that an author I had loved for many years, and devoured her works eagerly (even the ones that were just so-so in my opinion) had taken a turn in her career that I (as I thought at the time) would not follow.
Four years later, I picked up 'Christ The Lord' again...having read several thrillers with a 'religious' theme to them, and deciding to finally give this a chance.
I have to be perfectly honest and say that, in the first 100 pages..I considered this a one star book, at best. The simplistic language, the stilted prose...I knew that Rice had written this book 'in the voice of the seven year old Jesus', but....I was having such difficulty in reading it, and wished she had opted for another, an older, character's voice to tell the tale.
However, beyond page 100.....the book becomes yet another astonishing, beautifully written, lavishly imagined tale from the mind of Anne Rice..and I was certainly not disappointed having reached this turning point.
Beginning with the 'killing' and resurrection of one of Yeshua's (Jesus) playmates, the story of the 'Christos Kyrios' opens in the seventh year of life of the young 'begotten of God'. Yeshua's family, having fled the holy land for Egypt following Yeshua's miraculous birth in Bethlehem, ends their eight year exile and returns to their home..finding their city burnt and in despair. Joseph, Mary, and their large extended family of uncles, aunts, cousins, etc. - return to apply the family trade, carpentry, and rebuild the city. Yeshua and his brother James, along with the other young males of the family, are enrolled in a temple school to be taught by the Rabbis...but Yeshua receives more of an education than he anticipated along the way, as he hears (and remembers hearing) fragments of conversation about his birth in Bethlehem..and about a terrible deed committed by King Herod. Only at the end of the tale does Yeshua discover the truth of the 'miracle child' born in Bethlehem, the atrocity of King Herod, and the reason why he has never called Joseph 'Father'.....that he is the begotten of God....child of the Lord..born to a virgin mother, and hidden from the reaches of Herod for all of his young life.
Full of breathtaking images, meticulous detail, and layer upon layer of elegant craftsmanship, Anne Rice re-imagines the Holy Land of 2000+ years ago, and delivers a tale to fill in the details on the youth of Jesus Christ,...missing from history for so many centuries.
Despite the initial misgivings with the first portion of the book, this is yet another example of what has made Anne Rice such a masterful storyteller for 30+ years.....her recreation and telling of a subject so deeply personal to her, as explained in the author's note which accompanies the tale, is nothing short of brilliant.
As much as I miss Lestat and company....Anne Rice, though I have long delayed continuing along on her literary journey, has not lost even an iota of her skill to captivate a reader. I encourage any former fan, no matter what you believe in, to join her in this new direction of storytelling.
