Book Review: end the fighting at the dinner table!

I was a thin child with a limited appetite, and my parents made me stay at the table until I had eaten what they considered to be "enough dinner". I was also extremely stubborn, and soon discovered that I had the power to make the entire family stay and wait while I poked at my three peas. In the end, I grew up fine, but that aspect of my childhood was a disaster.
When I had children myself, I saw the pattern start to repeat itself. I have twins, and one would eat just about anything I put in front of her in a no-nonsense manner and move on. The other (who was thin from about six months of age, although always tall and growing) would eat almost nothing. So I would try to make her, and I tell you that girl is even more stubborn than I am. So there we were, a toddler and her mother, locked in battle at the dinner table with a new generation of power struggle unfolding.
Until someone gave me this book. I read and re-read it, and took her simple rules to heart: Adults decide when and what to offer, and kids decide whether and how much to eat. It was life-changing.
My daughters are seven now, and mealtimes are not a problem at all. My kids eat a mix of things, there is no begging for other choices, no returning an hour after a meal for snacks, they can make do when presented with "new stuff" at a grandparents or a wedding. It's terrific.
My stubborn daughter and I still clash over other things so I know that eating would have remained a hot-button issue if we had continued down the road I started. I think Ellyn Satter probably saved us from major trouble.
I cannot tell you how many parents I have recommended this to. It's that good!
