I found this book to get a great start to learn all the ins and outs of having chickens in your backyard.
I have still have not gotten chickens but I can see myself referencing this book for the basics as I go.
You may still desire other books like me to view the different breeds etc.
For the price its a great start.

This is an older book (mid-70's publication) but a great place to start if you know nothing about keeping chickens. It's not breed specific but good general information on bird anatomy and behavior, care, feeding, potential problems and solutions. I learned a lot with this book, but the quality is awful. It looks like it has been poorly reproduced. The illustrations are not good at all. I wish they would redo this with quality typesetting and graphics.Book Review: Expertise!

Nothing much can be said beyond the fact that this is the seminal text on chicken husbandry so if you're interested in getting started, reading this would be a good beginning to your endeavors.
