I started my backyard flock with only this book for reference. It's got really good information and is a really fun read - lots of humor mixed in with the great information. If you're thinking about starting a small flock and you're a beginner, this is the book you should buy. It's got great information including a chapter with basic poultry terminology, info on hatching chicks, chicken diseases, raising chickens for eggs or for meat, and a whole lot more. We live on a hobby farm in Minnesota, and this is the book that got me started with my flock of happy hens. It's written in plain, down-to-earth English for the rank beginner who wants to keep chickens on a small scale for eggs, meat, or just the pleasure of having them around. It's especially nice for the free-run flock, with instructions on choosing breeds, raising chicks, housing, nutrition, hatching your own chicks under broody hens or in an incubator, etc. A must-have for anybody who is thinking about keeping chickens. I've read lots of chicken books by wannabe experts, but the Luttmanns are the real deal. They have incredible experience, and can tell you the right way to do things the first time and what pitfalls to avoid. Predators, chicks, egg production, housing, health, and even whether you have the stomache for butchering, their weathered advice stands the test of time and puts other books to shame. And it's an easy read to boot: nothing too technical that your head starts spinning. A must-read for those with pet chickens or small free-range flocks.Book Review: Good Beginner's Book

This is an entertaining and informative little book for beginners.
I am now shopping for a more comprehensive book, but learned a lot of basics in this one, as well as enjoying the nice photos. There are several coop plans, and a (too short) section on breeds.
I think the book will be especially helpful for people who live in the North, as it includes a lot of advice on cold weather breeds and conditions. I live in Alabama, so am looking for a book that concentrates more on keeping the poultry from dying of heat prostration!:P

I bought this book based on someone's reccomendation ....and was not dissapointed. In fact, I found the book to be highly entertaining to read. It was well written, gave lots of basic information on how to start raising chickens without alot of technical information that I wasnt looking for. Would highly recommend this book to anyone who is thinking about having chickens, and the price of the book is very reasonable to boot!
