Book Review: Outstanding update of an all-time classic

what a breath of fresh air that someone has taken this classic work - which has been out of print and hard to come by for some reason - and has updated it.
The book itself hardly needs any introduction or comment. It is simply a very highly recommended book for any serious chess player period. It contains long discussions about combinations, contacts, double attacks, etc. etc. and is in every sense a tactics training book. It contains many game examples, and many test positions.
the book is probably best suited for use by players rated about 1700 USCF and up - hence the title "advanced players".
this new updated work is really the same book - same text - same diagrams, etc. which was already in algebraic notation. However, it has been reprinted in a larger format. I think the larger layout is a boon - the books lays flat fairly easily while open. the type font, diagrams, binding, everything seems to be excellent!
thanks to Mr. Labate for taking the time and trouble of reprinting this book. I am eagerly devouring it(i.e. reading it) cover to cover as fast as I can. It is a total gem of a book.
I once attended a lecture for chess coaches by Grandmaster Maurice Ashley. He stated that the two things every chess player below master level should focus most of thier time and energy on were tactics and endgames. he stated without reservation that there was NOTHING that would raise a players strength more assuredly or faster.
So, if you have already played chess for a while, studied a few good books on basic tactics, basic endgames, maybe a middlegame text or two (like My System or some such similar book), then CHESS TACTICS FOR ADVANCED PLAYERS should be on your list
