Book Reviews of Che Guevara: A Revolutionary LifeBook Review: Excellent. Summary: 5 Stars
Extraordinary account of the life of one of the most -if not the most- fascinating historical figures of our time, one of the few that will probably live more than a thousand years, as having achieved the status of mith. Lee Anderson stops at every detail, searches in sources that had been closed until now and gives us hints of the multifacetic personality of the young, the revolutionary, the visionary and the man.
If something wrong it is the excesive amount of information on the revolutionary Cuba period, because sometimes the narration distances itself from the central actor. Also keep away those who look for the mythical Che and those who would want to find a devil in him (after all a commie!), because this is a rigourous book. The definitive biographie of Ernesto Guevara, sometimes known as Che.
Book Review: A complete book about the greatest man to have ever lived Summary: 5 Stars
I brought this book along with me on my travels through parts of Europe, an adventure like those Che and Alberto Granado went through in South America. Before reading it I had already respected the man, but after reading it, I learned how to travel as a traveller rather than as a tourist. I felt the real character of Che, and was amazed of the things he had done, and his take on life. In fact, after reading the book I decided to get Che tatooed on my arm. It is really a great book, and whatever you know about Che, wether you feel he was good or bad, read the book to find out the truth for yourself. What was interesting was that on the plane I was reading the book and the man sitting next to me was Bolivian, and told me his father was one of the generals responsible for killing Che!!
Book Review: A great "warts-and-all" portrayal of Guevara Summary: 5 Stars
A comprehensive portrayal of one of the most important men of the 20th century. Anderson generally puts Guevara's actions in a positive light, but this book is by no means a canonization. Anderson vividly describes what made Che a great revolutionary leader--his courage, intelligence and great powers of persuasion. At the same time we learn about the "dark side" of Che's personality--including his brutality and uncompromising self-righteousness. There are some parts of the book that will make you laugh as well--like Che's brief, unsuccessful career in guerilla dentistry. If you want to know more about Che, Cuba, or Latin American history you should read this book. It looks imposing (800 pages) but once you get into it it won't seem that way at all.
Book Review: A Bigger than Life Book from a Bigger than Life Author Summary: 5 Stars
Finding an author who can dissect the life of someone as complex as Dr. Ernesto Guevara would be a formidible task. From his motorcycle adventures, to the Congo, to his death at the hands of hired assassins it's a life transcending life, passion beyond simple belief and a macabre martyrdom exceeding savagery. Anderson, no slouch at romantic adventures of his own, has done a definitive job of explaining someone who strode the earth as a giant and died the same way, without apology and without regrets. I hope the picture may be some day complete with an equally detailed account of of the monomaniacal Felix Rodriguez, who is the eminence gris of this and other intrigues of our times. Ernesto Guevara seems quaint today but to quote Joe Hill, "I'll never die said he".
Book Review: Excellent Biography of a Revolutionary Evolution! Summary: 5 Stars
This book is the best biography of the life of Ernesto "El Che'" Guevarra, bar none! Jon Lee Anderson does a fantastic job documenting and following this controversial historical figures life. As Che evolved through his life's experiences; so does the readers understanding of him when reading this book. Reading about this man provokes the readers thoughts and emotions on every level.
I highly recommend it for anyone who wants to know more than the political propoganda that is so readily spread about this man's life and accomplishments. This man was clearly a person who wanted to change the world. His place in history will always be questionable and debated. However, his dedication to his ideals and the lives of others was not. Excellent reading!
