Book Review: Leadership at its best

First time I met Samantha Power was through a Ted video special that underlined the humanitarian world as a whole. Toward the end Power introduced Sergio Vieira de Mello and that was it for me. Ever since I knew that I would have to put time aside to consume what I thought would be the best intellectual piece in my entire youth and God was I right. Power is such a wonderful writer that you often forget that you're actually reading. At times it feels like I'm walking alongside Sergio on his risky trips to the toughest region of the world. That said, I strongly recommend the willing to own and savor this book for all its worth and if you are a cheap bastard like me, you can always circulate your hard earn copy to friends. On that last note make certain that your copy will find its way back to your library. When the movie is produced and months away from the big screen, I want the book by side.
Anyone who aspires to travel the world and serve the underserved of the world needs to closely study Sergio de Mello. He embodies what the United Nations should be but we all know all too well that it will never happen. What may have been as well a curse and a blessing for Sergio gave him an entire playground to lay out his principle. Not until later in his adult life, Sergio did not belong to any country, he was born a native of the UN. As a result, Sergio had no true native ideology to follow but his own. And he did just that all his life, learning from past mistakes, adjusting his life to a reality he would later acquiesces to: no matter how honest you are to a cause, adverse event you have no control over can and will trump all humane effort. On that last note I want to underline that Sergio was far from being a quitter, he was a realistic fighter that understand the importance of neutrality in the face of adversity Sergio de Mello's. By putting his life in line for complete strangers, he proved that humanity has yet to sink into hell. He is that diamond in the dirt if you will and if the UN had more people the like of Sergio, maybe the UN would be on its way to global credibility.
