Book Reviews of Chasing Justice: My Story of Freeing Myself After Two Decades on Death Row for a Crime I Didn't Commit

Book Review: A brave man who patiently fought injustice in the legal system
Summary: 5 Stars

Mr. Cook has to be one of the bravest and most patient men living today. The amount of abuse he received from the prison system was phenomenal. In the courtroom, the lies, fabrications of key pieces of evidence, the instructions given to witnesses about what they were to give as testimony by the DA, the loss of key evidence by the DA, a judge who was eager to allow the DA to make points while over riding the defense. Terrible evidences of incompetence by the DA, deliberate wrongdoing, junk science, laziness, grandstanding, politics taking presedence over the discovery of truth. If some earnest, decent men with a spark of conscience (other than Mr. Cook and his attorneys) had been in the courtroom, this never would have happened. Following this the man is thrown into a virtual hell hole of cruel convicts. It is clear that the safety of the prisoners is far from the minds of the guards. Though untrue, the DA has claimed that the author is a homosexual. Someone rips his pants down and carves pussy on his buttocks. The shocking thing about this is that the guards seem unconcerned. Are they being paid to have prisoners humiliated, beyond what was intended in their sentence? This intelligent, non-vindictive man triumphs over lying witnesses, a DA who will stop at nothing to win, and judges who seem to be the puppets of the DA. He was helped by his understanding of each piece of evidence, The Centurian Foundation, anonymous donors, many excellent attorneys, investigative reporters, and many supporters. In the end, one is left with the impression that there was no one who could have done this except Kerry Cook, and that Kerry Cook could not have done this without many many helpers. Mr.Cook's victory is a victory for each one of us. His case makes a turn for the better when he asks God to help him, and he does give God credit.

Summary of Chasing Justice: My Story of Freeing Myself After Two Decades on Death Row for a Crime I Didn't Commit

Kerry Cook is an innocent man who wrongly served two decades in Texas's notorious death house for the brutal 1977 rape and murder of 21-year-old Linda Jo Edwards. His struggle for freedom is said to be one of the worst cases of police and prosecutorial misconduct in American history.

In the summer of 1977, Cook was staying in Tyler, TX. He met an attractive young woman named Linda Edwards and was invited back to her apartment for a drink and left his fingerprints on the sliding glass door. Four days later, Ms. Edwards was found brutally murdered. When the police dusted for prints, they found Cook's and immediately arrested him. Edward Jackson testified that Cook confessed to the murder during a jailhouse conversation. Jackson was set free, only to kill again several years later. Cook, on the other hand, was convicted and sentenced to death.

He was thrown into a world for which no one could be prepared, and he survived beatings, sexual abuse, and depression; all the while, he fought against a justice system that was determined to keep him quiet and loath to admit a mistake. Through the work of a crusading group of lawyers who forced a series of retrials, his case made its way to the U.S. Supreme Court, which ordered the case be reconsidered. It wasn't until the spring of 1999 that Cook was finally able to put the nightmare behind him: long-suppressed DNA evidence had linked James Mayfield, Linda Edwards's ex-lover, to the crime.
