Book Reviews of Charlotte Mason's Original Homeschooling SeriesBook Review: Must have if you're serious about Charlotte Mason Summary: 5 Stars
I had read comments in other books about Charlotte Mason's writings being very difficult to read, so I was nervous about getting her books. I read several of the companion books on the market before I decided to get these books. They are wonderful. They are not a quick, easy read, but they are full of wonderful, valuable information that the companion books don't give you. If you want to incorporate only a little of Charlotte Mason into your homeschool the companion books will probably be sufficient for you, but if you are serious about having a Charlotte Mason homeschool you should read these books for yourself.
Book Review: Best Series on Homeschooling I've Ever Read Summary: 5 Stars
For those of you who want to have direct information, I strongly suggest reading this series. I borrowed and read five other books about Miss Mason's techniques but felt that I really needed to have the original. This series has not been disappointing. I will use this as reference material for many years to come and am so glad that I have been able to read through these books for myself. Please do not be fooled by the titles in the series and skip over any. The first one was especially useful. This is a MUST READ for ALL Homeschoolers.
Book Review: The best way to homeschool Summary: 5 Stars
There is so much wisdom to be gained from reading these books! Often, homeschoolers buy the curriculum of choice, but never learn HOW to homeschool. The CM series contains practical advice for creating a love of learning that will last a lifetime and training future members of society with good habits and a "think for yourself" attitude that is often lost today.
Book Review: Worth Reading Summary: 5 Stars
I thought these would be a lot harder to follow, so I started with the Charlotte Mason Companion. I am glad I chose to read the originals. It was easy to grasp what Charlotte is trying to say even though some of the language different from how we talk today. There are so many good nuggets of information.
Book Review: A good skim-read Summary: 4 Stars
If you already know the basic premise of Charlotte Mason's philosophy on education, then you should be able to get through this series rather quickly. I skipped over much of her material since it is pretty antiquated. For example, I didn't feel I needed to read about the importance of outdoors or her dietary restrictions (no mustard, vinegar, pork or pastry...weird) not to mention how night air "quickens the blood". The best way to view this series is to skim it and pluck out the gems of wisdom regarding educating your children- I wouldn't follow her every recommendation to the letter. All in all, an essential read if you are planning on adopting the Charlotte Mason method.
