Book Reviews of Change We Can Believe In: Barack Obama's Plan to Renew America's Promise

Book Review: Should Be Required Reading Before the 2010 Elections
Summary: 1 Stars

365 Days later the arrogant dishonesty of the book becomes more apparent.

It's primary value in 2010 is that of a scorecard, like keeping the old advertisement for a defective product. It reminds you of the gulf between promises and performance and the need to make a better decision next time.

The outline of the book is from one of the prior fawning reviews. A reality check is added

1. Reviving Our Economy: Strengthening the Middle Class

* Provide immediate relief with an emergency economic plan - Ya'll might recall that the trillion or so rushed through Congress in the dead of the night was to keep unemployment from rising above 8%, the result, record profits for banks and wall street and a reported unemployment rate in the mid 10% range. The actual rate is probably 15% . Few also realize that the clunker program was not so much intended to help dealers, car manufacturers or consumers as it was designed to get bankers back the money loaned to floor the cars at the dealer as these cars were about to be last year's model. The surge in car sales was followed by a drop off.

* Economic security and opportunity for all American families - Are you more secure today ? Economic security should come from the individual family taking advantage of economic opportunity while providing a safety net only for those who are incapable supporting themselves.

* Affordable health care for all Americans - A 1,200 page bill that is simply a collection of the compromises necessary to get votes is being sold to the public. A couple hundred million Americans will become lab rats for the greatest medical experiment in history. No small scale testing, no fine tuning of tested prototypes, just one kludge of programs, designed to be free from court or congressional oversight. Obama, several million government workers, workers union plans will watch from the safety of the sidelines as their lush plans are not affected.

* Empower families to succeed- OK as long as they are the families of bankers and wall street traders and of course some friendly law firms. There was far more angst about the economic fate of the investment bankers and wall street than genuine concern for the American family.

* Restore trust, return to fiscal responsibility - step one was to deep six the promise to leave approved bills in the sunlight before signing. Now it has disappeared or is redefined to be from when the legislation was written so that citizens have to stay current with every draft. Fiscal responsibility? - record new debt, trillions to wall street . Trust - The approval of Geitner says a lot. Contrary to what the big press would like to have you believe, Geitner did not under pay his taxes. Rather he took funds given to him by the UN for delivery to the fed govt (equivalent to your employeer's withholding) and rather than remitting them to the govt just stuck them in his pocket.

Just to confirm the administration's view of trust and reform - Eric Holder announced this week that payments would continue to Acorn, despite a Congressional ban on such payments. This is the same Eric Holder who testified that he say nothing unusual when he approved the pardon of Marc Rich at the end of the Clinton administration. Nothing unusual? Marc Rich was on Page 1 of the State Department's Most Wanted International Fugitive website at the time of the pardon, side by side with bin Laden.

2. Investing In Our Prosperity: Creating our Economic Future The huge deficits are being funded by foreign countries who will convert much of this debt into real assets. The US has the very real possibility of being converted into a third world country where the buildings, mines and factories are owned by foreign interests to whom we send the rents and profits.

* Promote our energy independence and create five million green jobs- Promoting the false economics of wind and solar power as a replacement for fossil fuel or an alternative for nuclear ignores the fundamental truth that these sources cost 200%-400% of the current sources. These are promising technologies which are unable to compete economically with alternatives including nuclear. We will be a poorer nation as a result. Japan, Germany. France, Sweden, Belgum, Switzerland and a host of other counties produce more of their electricity from nuclear. However, it is not on the Obama agenda.

* A world-class education for every American Educational improvements will not come until there are alternatives for all parents to send their kids to good schools. Where public schools hold a monopoly and are run for the benefit of the unions, politicians and political insiders, education takes a distant backseat to politics.

* Make America the undisputed leader in science and technology - Just approved transfer of sensitive missile technology to China which will help them compete for launch vehicle business and of course build better nuclear missiles

* Build the infrastructure of the twenty-first century

* Help our small businesses and manufacturers thrive and create jobs- Healthcare as it is written will hurt business, participation in the global warming mob ( now shown to be based on politics not science) hurts small business, the end of secret balloting for unions small hurts business, . Helping business, well Wall Street and Geitner's friends have done ok, have you?

* Compete and thrive in the global economy

3. Rebuilding America's Leadership: Restoring our Place in the World- Foreign visits have only exposed his weakness. The talk nice and hold hands diplomacy he promised has already failed.

* End the war in Iraq responsibly - There's no real progress other than troops demoralized by the lack of support in DC

* Finish the fight against Al Qaeda and turn the tide against global terrorism-Obama promised the country that he would transfer from his self created "Office of the President Elect" to the President fully up to speed to make the big decisions. Yet Obama has been unwilling to make a decision on Afghanistan in the 5 months since his hand picked general requested more troops. Initially the Obama administration attempted to delay the general's analysis until AFTER Obama made his decision. Once the decision is made the military has no choice but to support the president or resign.

* Rebuild a strong twenty-first-century military - Well we have canceled the F-22, the best in the world in the name of economy while senting a trillion or so to the wall street bankers and lawyers. That's sure to win the wars of the future. Within a few months those who have never served in the military in a cramped ship or remote outpost will abolish the don't ask don't tell policy and replace it with a no restrictions policy.

* Stop the spread of nuclear weapons The flowers and kisses programs have gone nowhere with N Korea and Iran. Proliferation continues . The UN keeps its eyes closed. America is seen as a joke.

* Renew our alliances to meet new global challenges The British are up in arms at Obama's unwillingness to come to a decision on Afghanistan while troops are in the field. Again , Obama's promise was that he had a plan ready to go to win in Afghanistan.

4. Perfecting Our Union: Embracing America's Values - compare that with the actions re friends, wall street, blaming the cops and telling us not to jump to conclusions regarding the Ft Hood shootings. Those who might have looked in the background to connect the dots.

In his senate campaign Obama had a TV debate with Alan Keyes during which Keyes suggested that Obama needed some spiritual guidance. Obama's retort was that he did not need any outside advice, he (Obama) received all of his spiritual direction from HIS minister. Who was his minister Rev Wright. The same Rev Wright who preached from the pulpit - God damm America and other hate filled diatribes.

* Restore trust in government and clean up Washington see above Also note that the recent rise in gold and fall of the dollar are a clear message the the world does not trust our government. This is also the administration that helped create Acorn and provided support to the organization.

* Make voluntary citizen service universal Universal and voluntary are mutually exclusive.

* Partner with communities of faith - Like Acorn and Rev Wright

* Strengthen families - Success, to the extent that having the kids move home, giving up travel, entertainment, ect make you stronger. A health plan to get rid of grandpa and grandma earlier.

* Advance equal opportunity for all Americans - Sorry we have to support the Wall Street bankers to their accustomed lifestyle.

* Secure our borders and reform a broken immigration system Seen any changes?

* Safeguard the environment for future generations

* Honor sportsmen and protect the great outdoors

* Fight crime and promote public safety - You promote public safety by supporting the police, like the Cambridge incident. You protect the public when you keep foreign terrorists out of the US court system. The only reason the terrorist trials are being held in NY is to give the Obama administration a tool to shift public focus from other problems and stuff like citizen protests . Holder has the ability to suck the air out of the news on any given day or week. It also gives them a chance to have the waterboarding issue brought to the public by the terrorists so Obama's hands are clean.

This book should be required 2010 reading for every person who voted for Obama.
