Book Reviews of Certain Girls: A NovelBook Review: Solid B Summary: 3 StarsOkay, like a lot of the other reviewers, I was kind of surprised at what happened to Cannie over the years, but I felt like I really started understanding what she was thinking about half-way through the book. Motherhood is a big change and it changes how you see yourself. You know, the whole "your life isn't yours anymore" thing. Still, the obsession with the bat mitzvah got so tiresome. And I didn't feel like the daughter's chapters really worked. It was sort of like Cannie-lite.
But the book still has a lot of funny moments and the ending will definitely leave you wondering. Pretty good, but not great.
Book Review: hmmmmm... Summary: 3 StarsLike many have said... I love Weiner's work. This book had some nice parts, but was also surprisingly boring sometimes and depressing. I am all for surprises, but come on!
Book Review: What happened to the cannie we loved from good in bed Summary: 3 StarsWhat happened the she smart witted, funny Cannie we loved from
Good in Bed? When I finished reading Good in Bed, I couldn't wait to see what life was like for Cannie... but I didn't feel like I was reading about the same character. This book by itself was a good enough book, but it did not leave me wanting more of the characters.
Book Review: Just so sad and disappointing Summary: 1 StarsThe first book in this series was a "rise above the fray" book during which I laughed and cried and fell in love with the heroine. I was so excited when I saw this book was out.
I am not sure what happened to Ms. Wiener to make her do what she did in this book. The "twist" that happens just a few chapters from the end left me shocked and in tears and all I could ask myself was why Ms. Wiener would do this to a character who had fought through her life to finally have some happiness.
I was more than disappointed. Not every book has to have a happy ending, but this was beyond reproach. Did I enjoy this book? I spent hours reading it and then felt crushed and betrayed. I am sorry I ever picked it up.
Book Review: Un-Certain Summary: 2 StarsI expect better from such an accomplished author.
It's as though her publishers wanted a new book and she wrote this in her sleep.
We go back and forth from the mother's story to the daughter's story. A hackneyed device.
Neither story is very interesting, so it's almost a relief when you finish a chapter and can go to the other character's story. Still she has a way with words and there are many original turns of phrase.
