Book Reviews of Certain Girls: A NovelBook Review: Read with caution Summary: 2 StarsI loved Good in Bed and was so excited to read this one. I was shocked at the difference and didn't like it. First of all the chapters alternate between the views of Cannie and Joy, and sometimes it gets confusing, especially one when they are with Cannie's mother, I had to check back to the last chapter to check whose mindset I should be in right now. And then of course the ending had me crying and just ruined the book for me. Cannie had been through so much and I don't see why Weiner had to have that happen. Don't read this unless you want a depressing ending.
Book Review: Great sequel but perhaps unnecessary... Summary: 4 StarsI am really split as to how I feel about the book. On one hand, after The Guy Not Taken and Goodnight Nobody, I was relieved to have an actual novel from Jennifer Weiner that was reminiscent of her earlier books that I loved so much. That said, although this was a well-written book with parts that literally made me sob unabashedly, I think it was perhaps unnecessary. Whenever I read a great book and love the characters, I hate to leave them behind and want to be able to read more about them. However, even though it is so hard to leave much loved characters behind, sometimes it is for the best because continuing the story does not necessarily add more or make the first book better. I feel that Certain Girls was a victim of this phenomenon. I just don't know that it made Good in Bed better for me or that it continued the story in a way that it needed it to be continued. Nonetheless, it was a beautifully written, very realistic book, and while perhaps unnecessary, certainly not disappointing, and the best from Jennifer Weiner in recent years.
Book Review: Mommy deserves some time off Summary: 2 Stars Jennifer Weiner is the mother of two young children, a blogger, a wife and a prolific author who increasingly seems to be suffering from burnout. Her last book was a collection of old short stories. This book reads like a halfhearted offering by an (understandably) overtired, creatively drained new mommy who didn't want to write it in the first place. (In Certain Girls, Weiner's alter-ego, Cannie, is hounded by her editor to write a sequel to her successful first novel, a plot point that seems a little too autobiographical.) Whole chunks of the plot of Certain Girls come out of left field, as if the author hurriedly switched around or deleted scenes, and then didn't read the final draft to make sure everything still made sense. One example: Halfway through and with no warning, Cannie's flaky sister inexplicably gets her act together thanks to a barely explained quasi-religion called Be-ism, which she has apparently discovered "off-screen." Weiner is one of the better light-women's-fiction writers out there. I wish for her a year off to recharge her batteries.
Book Review: Another great book Summary: 5 StarsThis book was as good as Jennifer's other books. It was a fast read and very entertaining. Her characters are very real and I like how she presents two of the characters in first person. If you liked her other books, you'll really like this one!!!!!!!!!!!11111
Book Review: Certain Girls by Jennifer Weiner Summary: 3 StarsStill a great read from Jennifer Weiner as all her books are enjoyable and a fast read but others still remain my favorites.
