Book Reviews of Cemetery DanceBook Review: These authors are back to top form Summary: 5 Stars
Seldom do I find myself scanning ahead in a book to try to find the answer to the latest plot twist, because a reader should suspend disbelief and ride the tide as the author(s) intend. But this is exactly what I did more than once so as to ratchet down the emotion of wondering, "Did what I think just happened really happen!!??"
It was exciting/stimulating/fun/scary to immerse oneself into this unfamiliar world with characters I knew and cared about. Surely losing Smithback is a huge shock, but this gives the authors an opportunity to explore the raw emotions exposed by grief, without allowing the reader to simply dismiss the loss of a character and comfortably move on. The worries I felt at the end of Wheel of Darkness, that Pendergast was taking off in uncharted (and possibly unwanted) directions, were set to rest. If anything, he has become more accessible, more interactive, with a touch of wry humor tossed in to bring his persona closer to full measure than in previous books.
Book Review: Fantastic! Summary: 5 Stars
I have been waiting for this book for quite some time. I have been a longtime fan of P&C and this latest addition to my shelf, the one dedicated to them, didnt dissapoint. While I was sad at the loss of Smithback it really opens up alot of possibilities for another novel with Nora. I am not going to talk about much of the plot, except that going down the mysterious Oubeah and Voudoo road was sheer genius. I love it when Pendergast can pull from his New Orleans background to figure out something. It just adds to the mystique that is Pendergast. I too would like to go back into his past more - maybe a prequel that tells us what brought him to the point we met him in Relic. Going deeper into his New Orleans childhood would be very interesting. He has certainly exposed us to some intriguing characters in his family.
This is a MUST read! Dont hesitate to get this book and dive right in!
The only thing that saddens me is now I have to wait for the next book.
Book Review: The dance of death. Summary: 5 Stars
The first review is always a tough one to follow, but I'll do my best. I have been anticipating this book for more than a year and the wait was worth it. Once again the authors deliver one of those creepy tales set in contemporary New York City. I particularly like the way they always center their plots around the Museum of Natural History because it can be a scary place even on a good day. Special Agent Pendergast returns in his role as a modern-day Sherlock Holmes. He speaks very little, but he takes everything in. His Aunt Cordelia also returns and never fails to send chills down my spine. The inciting incident is shocking, but I don't think I'd want you to know what it is up front. It's difficult to see a recurring character die, especially one who is this likable. If you follow the series you will not be disappointed with the latest installment. And if you are a "newby" you'll want to go back and read the previous books. Either way, enjoy!
Book Review: A Spooky Zombii Story Summary: 5 Stars
Cemetary Dance was a strange title for a book, or so I thought when I bought it. It is certainly on my list of scary stories and if you like to figure out puzzles and speculate about just how weird human beings can get, this story will rivit you. I think I read the whole book in two or three sittings. The story takes place in NYC, and features characters Pendergast fans have come to love -- Nora Kelly, Smithback, D'Agosta, Wren and Pendergast. There are some real surprises, lots of bizarre killings, weird cults who have become squatters in an old church in the northern part of Manhattan, animal sacrifices, voodoo and some of its iterations, and of course a final chapter that you will not be able to put down. Frankly, I've had a dream or two about this story and the dreams were a little unsettling.
It's worth every penny, and I think it would make a great movie, as long as Julian Sands plays the role of Pendergast.
Book Review: another great book! Summary: 5 Stars
When my husband came home with the Advanced Reader Copy of Cemetery Dance back in March, the first words out of my mouth were "I love you!". I don't mean it to sound like I only love him for the books he can supply me, but there are benefits to being married to someone who works at a bookstore. Advanced Reader Copies are one of them.
While upset at the death of a long term character, I really enjoyed Cemetery Dance even though it lacked some of the thrill of other Preston/Child books. I have never yet been disappointed in one of their books and don't ever expect to be. While many characters make appearances Cemetery Dance, some are only mentioned in passing. I hope some day we'll get to meet them all again. For the record, while Preston and Child have written thirteen books together, this is the ninth Pendergast novel. I'll never grow tired of him, so hopefully there will be many more.
