Book Reviews of Cemetery Dance

Book Review: A Very Enjoyable and Entertaining Read
Summary: 5 Stars

I've been a fan of Preston and Child's books ever since I read "Relic" and spent much of the night hiding under the covers. While I still consider "Relic" and "Reliquary" to be among the absolute best of their novels, I really enjoy their other works too. These authors have got to have the best descriptive language I have ever seen--they certainly know how to create vivid images in one's imagination. Given the fact that Agent Pendergast is one of my favorite characters and the fact that I get a kick out of reading about zombiis and other weird stuff, I thoroughly enjoyed "Cemetery Dance". As is frequently the case with their novels, I was not able to figure out the mystery behind the deaths. This made for an enjoyable and entertaining read all the way through to the end. In fact, I stayed up FAR too late for too many nights, sacrificing a few hours' sleep to find out what would happen next. There wasn't A LOT of the Pendergast character, but there was enough that it didn't disappoint. I was particularly pleased to note that there was almost nothing of the Constance character (my least favorite). All in all, another great book by Preston and Child and one that I definitely recommend.

Book Review: Obeah and Voudou and Zombiis, OH MY!
Summary: 5 Stars

To be honest, I didn't heart Wheel of Darkness, though Preston/Child at their worst is still better than just about anybody else.

Cemetery Dance however, has all the elements I've loved from the previous Pendergast books--creepy atmosphere, an assortment of lively (no pun intended) characters on both sides of the good/evil scale, high body count and what P and C do SO well, a supernatural edge.

It's difficult to review this book without spoilers, but I'll do my best. One of my all time favorite characters is killed off in the first chapter--or is he? A mysterious settlement called the Ville on the tip of Manhattan is one of the settings, and bodies disappear and reappear with regularity. Pendergast rises to the occasion, consulting with Aunt Cordelia and his childhood tutor (a wonderful character evocative of Truman Capote and Tennessee Williams). D'Agosta is at his hardboiled best, battling Department politics as well as denizens of the dark. The denoument is appropriately frightening and Cemetery Dance is a most satisfactory addition to the Pendergast canon. Loved it!

Book Review: Black Magic Moments
Summary: 5 Stars

CEMETERY DANCE is the latest edge-of-your-seat thriller from the fertile (deranged?) minds of authors Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child. The story reunites some favorite characters from previous outings: Bill Smithback, Nora Kelly, Vincent D'Agosta, Wren, and Special Agent Aloysius Pendergast.
This time Agent Pendergast is up to his silver eyes in animal sacrifices, Voodoo, Obeah, gris-gris, secret societies, and zombies.
The cynical Lieutenant D'Agosta, a down to earth homicide detective, relies on proven police procedurals to solve the murders he is investigating, while Pendergast's probing takes them down twisted paths of the arcane and macabre dark arts.Together the two make for an unlikely but satisfying team as they work to ferret out who is responsible for the present day zombies creating havoc in New York City. They will need to hurry if they hope to save the life of Nora Kelly.
Preston and Child have created another rousing tale that current fans and new readers will thoroughly enjoy.

Book Review: Thoroughly enjoyed this continuation of Pendergast novels...
Summary: 5 Stars

I have always been intrigued by this character of Preston/Child. These novels are usually a little on the 'odd' side, but it's that oddness which makes them so readable. I'm sure readers who are new to these books will have a difficult time, because the development of the characters have been done in the books prior to this one. For those who have read those books, it's easy to pick up the threads and continue. What's hard is usually Preston/Child kills off one of the characters that we've enjoyed in previous stories. This time it was the newspaperman...and it happened in the first few pages.
The plots are always interesting, and since most of them revolve around museums, artifacts, science, pseudo-science...they are really interesting to me (since I teach many sciences). I always look forward to the next installment. Not only will I be entertained, but I'll probably learn something new which usually causes me to go to the Internet to get more information.
Great beach book, very fast read.

Book Review: Always a fun, thrilling 5 Stars

Cemetary Dance is definitely better than "Wheels of Darkness". It has better story and twists and turns and can be believable. Yes, I agree with some other reviewers that there was a lot of other character like D'agosta, and not as much of Pandergast. It seems like that the writers want to use Pandergast sparingly, like they will run out of him.
I hope that Preston-Child read this review, because this is what they need to do with their future installment of the Pandergast series:

1- Bring Diogenes back, we all know that he is not dead, he just fell off a cliff. Their is a lot left between these two brothers which requires closure.
2- Constance will have a child and Diogenes would want to see it.
3- Pandergast's love interest needs to re-emerge.
4- Give us a thriller that would even surpass " Cabinet of Curiosities", which is by far their best book, I would say even better than "Relic".

Over all it is a really enjoyable read and I highly recommend it.
