Book Reviews of Caught Stealing: A Novel

Book Review: A homerun regarding a reluctant hitman
Summary: 5 Stars

I came across the Henry Thompson series, of which "Caught Stealing" is the first of the trilogy, by what turned out to be a fortuitous accident. Huston is a terrific writer, concise and totally engaging. The stories are quite violent but that befits the subject and the tone of the story. His character, Henry Thompson, grabs at you and compels you to root for him even as events force him into steps he could never imagine taking. Once I finished I was driven to finish parts 2 and 3 and found them as good as the first. Unless you like your stories very sedate, this is a great series, well worth discovering.

Book Review: Hard to put down
Summary: 5 Stars

The premise of the book is the wrong place / wrong guy scenario's where the lead character is going to be on the run a lot. It takes place in and around New York and paints a complete suburban nightmarescape of bad neighborhoods surrounded by not so bad neighborhoods. The story is told from a narrative point of view which really servers to draw the reader into the frantic world of the protaganist. I've got to say that I really enjoyed living through the eyes of someone who is just in the wrong place at the wrong time. It's a fun fast read.

Book Review: Not for the faint of heart
Summary: 5 Stars

This is not the kind of book I normally read, but I picked it up based on a recommendation by Stephen King posted in the NYTimes this spring. I read it in one night. It is violent, very violent, but the evolution of Hank Thompson's character and the unexpected turns of the plot makes this book impossible to put down. And then there's the cat who clearly has more than nine lives.... In the middle of the all the mayhem and mystery I found myself wondering how is Buddy holding out -- which it turns out is one of Hank Thompson's concerns too.

Book Review: Smart, Witty, Fast-Paced Fun
Summary: 5 Stars

Charlie Huston has a knack for comic timing and structure, a fearless imagination and a wicked sense of the absurd. He also doesn't waste the reader's time with the inessential and his characters are comic gems without being caricatures. This book is a ripping, wild ride, loads of fun and engagingly human despite its dark elements--but that's where the humor kicks in. I found myself caring for Hank in a way I haven't rooted for a protagonist in a long, long while. I'll definitely be reading everything Huston writes.

Book Review: awesome, just awesome!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

I loved this book and I just finished the whole trilogy. I read them in 2 weeks. I couldn't get enough of Henry Thompson. You can't help but to love the character and feel sorry for him at the same time. Oh yeah, and there's a cat. I saw this book at the library and was instantly hooked. No, this book is not for everyone. From dirty cops to black cowboys and russians in jumpsuits. I will be buying the trilogy so I can read them as much as I want.
