Book Reviews of Caught Stealing: A NovelBook Review: A reason to stay in Summary: 5 Stars
I first read Charlie Huston's "Six bad things" and had no idea I was caught in the middle of a trilogy until I was a few chapters in. After I finished that I went backwards and picked up Caught Stealing here at Amazon. It starts off a little slow compared to six bad things but it picks up quick. I had trouble getting into the book until Huston begins to make remarkable every day observations about how decent people can fall into bad situations out their own kindness. It's the kind of writing style that speaks to you.
Huston creates a confounding protagonist in Hank and you're not quite sure where he's going when he's not running for his life or even if he cares but it's definitely addictive. A serious buy.
Book Review: Easy, breezy, powerful read. Summary: 5 Stars
Charlie Huston is the new king of pulp fiction. Don't be fooled by the brevity of this book. It looks slight, but packs a mean punch. The plot is a simple "wrong man, wrong time, wrong place", which in the hands of a less skilled or even more verbose writer would just never rise above the gimmick. Huston's staccato-like prose hits like a machine gun on full auto! Once I started this book, I literally couldn't put it down and ended up dedicating an entire 12 hours on a Saturday to go cover to cover. I've read a lot of genre crime books, and forgotten most of them, but "Caught Stealing" will always be right there at the front of my mind making me laugh and squirm all at once. You must read this book!
Book Review: Thrilling, violent, creepy - an all out great read Summary: 5 Stars
If you love Greg Illes or Brian Freeman this is a must buy author.
No good deed goes unpunished or so goes the life of Hank Thompson. Being asked by his neighbor to watch his cat doesn't seem like a problem that is until Hank finds out Russ' secret and now has two Russians, two reform school runaways, a police detective and a whole cast of strange people out to kill him.
If only he hadn't been caught stealing third base in high school Hank would have had the life he had always dreamed of, now he has half of New York after him and a cat to take care of.
Thrilling, violent, creepy - an all out great read. This is book one in the Hank Thompson Series.
Book Review: NYC, 4 Million Dollars, Russian Mafia......... Summary: 5 Stars
A great 1st novel by Charlie Huston!
"Caught Stealing" has been on my short list of books to read for quite awhile!
Finally, I took the plunge and read it straight through in one night!
Henry "Hank" Thompson is a great character, he turns from nice average guy to cold blooded killer towards the end of the book.
The book has alot of well written so called bad guys, the action is good!
I really liked the direction Charlie Huston was taking this novel towards the end of the book and I can't wait to read Part 2 "Six Bad Things" and Part 3 "A Dangerous Man" soon!
Highly recommended hard boiled action read....
Book Review: Gripping Novel Summary: 5 Stars
A gripping novel from the first page to the end. The violence is graphic, but fits with the characters involved. It is ye olde "guy accidentally gets stuck in the middle of a bad situation with very bad people," but I found it to be fresh and vibrant. I also loved the fact that the main character is trying to follow the travails of the New York Mets at the close of the season, while fighting to stay alive and figure out who are the good and who are the bad guys. Overall, an exciting read. By the way, my teenage daughter read the first few pages and decided to order her own copy from Amazon. I had gotten my copy from the library.
