Book Reviews of Cathedral

Book Review: A suspenseful read -- get a map.
Summary: 4 Stars

A great read, "Cathedral" is a very suspenseful account of how St. Patrick's Cathedral is taken over by terrorists. I sure could have used a map of the building to sort through the many scenes set throughout the Cathedral. After this and "Charm School," I'm encouraged to read more of DeMille's work.

Book Review: Very exciting, but somewhat formulaic.
Summary: 4 Stars

This book is absolutely exciting. Even though the premise was unlikely, and the end read like a made-for-TV-movie, I was so wrapped up in the action of this book that I would recommend this book. It would be especially good for long airplane flights, or on the beach. Read and enjoy.

Book Review: IRA Splinter Group Takes Over St. Patrick's Cathedral
Summary: 4 Stars

This book was written about 25 years ago but still makes for a most exciting read. Plenty of excitement, quick page turning and suspense. There were a lot of pages, 575, but the author had plenty of time to develop the characters and the plot. Quite a St. Patrick's Day for all involved!

Book Review: Excellent
Summary: 4 Stars

I am a big fan of NYPD and terrorist thrillers and this was one of my favorites. Except for a few accuracy probelms (NYPD's ESD intead of ESU and others) this was very entertaining.

Book Review: This book shows DeMille's promise.
Summary: 3 Stars

A small faction of the IRA takes over St. Patrick's cathedral in NYC on St. Patrick's Day and threatens to blow it up along with the Cardinal and three other hostages. About halfway through the book, the major characters are finally fully limned and the setup is complete. The action takes place over about 12 hours. After the first few chapters setting up the characters and scenario, the buildup to the last five or ten minutes when the final confrontation takes place is detailed and suspenseful. Those final 5-10 minutes of the storyline, however, are total chaos, not just plotwise but narrativewise -- understandable in this kind of situation but something that cannot be forgiven by the reader. I had the choice of slowing down my reading pace so I could keep track of what was happening or maintaining the rhythm at the risk of losing detail. I'd say it's an above-average thriller, with DeMille still waiting to fulfill his potential.
